A blog post I had about someone's botany study. I can't remember the blog, OR the name of the post or anything EXCEPT that the author used Thomas J. Elpel's Botany in a Day
I really wanted to go back and look at this post, but forgot to bookmark it . I THINK it was someone from this forum, but I am not sure. Can anyone help?

I'm betting it is Rebecca at Gypsy Caravan. She has some wonderful posts following the study.

Thanks ladies! I think Elpel's book Botany in a Day (BID) is such a great resource. If you are waffling on the book, know that much from the book can be found free on his website, regarding the seven most common plant families and their characteristics.
Here is the page (scroll towards the bottom) with the information by plant family that is in the BID book. BID is written for high school aged students through adults.
The child's version of BID is called Shanleya's Quest and is better book if you are teaching younger students. My oldest is eleven and has really enjoyed Shanleya's Quest.
We are reading one page per week and illustrating/notebooking that week's plant characteristics. The book certainly could be read in one sitting but I doubt it would be absorbed well since there is much to learn. I have posted photos of our work thus far in my left hand sidebar at A Gypsy Caravan and have listed all the posts at the link that Mary provided above.
While Shanleya's Quest it is not as extensive a resource as BID, it captures its readers in a fairy tale in which a Shanleya travels by canoe from one island to another. Each island is inhabited by one of the seven plant families and a "guardian". The children learn the characteristics of each family effortlessly just by reading the tale.
If you are considering purchasing one of these books and your children are less than junior high school age, I would use Shanleya's Quest with Elpel's free website.
If you yourself want to learn Botany or if you have older students, then Botany in a Day is an exhaustive, highly helpful resource.
HTH!

Very helpful, Rebecca. I am actually thinking of getting both books and doing it with all of the kids together, weekly just as you suggest. Ds had said he would like to study botany by family, and I forgot about his request until I saw your blog post. This will be very helpful and I am really pretty excited about it.

Theresa, If you are doing it as a family then both books are a great idea. I hope you blog your study! I will be excited to know how your ds enjoys it!
I have also been using Lori's Botany downloads from Montessori for Everyone for the little ones. My four and seven year old really enjoy them. Maybe an idea for your littles if you don't already have something lined up.

I had been considering a 'family' botany study too... I am wanting to learn more about herbs, and it just seemed fitting to extend this to include the kids
I will definitely look at the Shanleya's Quest now

Rachel, If you are wanting to learn more about herbs as a family, you might enjoy The Kids Herb Book. We are using it this year and it has some great recipes, fairy tales and tons of info on the most common herbs. I am learning much along with my children.
