Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We went to see PawPaw at the nursing home last week. There is a huge fishing pond in the front with swamp grasses and cattails.

(nursing home pond)

Garrett cut cattails for his little sisters before his dad told him the state doesn't want us doing that. I'm not sure why as they are in abundance.

(Annie with cattail)

So we brought them home. I put Annie's on the outside baker's rack that we use as our make-shift science lab/gardening center with the intent of cutting it open. Chels left hers in the vehicle where it was forgotten .

Today it exploded in the vehicle while we were shopping.    We came back to a vehicle full of wispy seedlings floating in the air and ended up standing in the Wal-Mart parking lot while the kids scrambled in the vehicle to capture as many little wisps as they could. The wisps stuck to everything and the vehicle is full of them.

Mark was not happy. Thanks to MacBeth and Charlotte Mason, I had more appreciation for the situation.    We looked at the slit in the cattail where they were all escaping.

We came home to find Annie's cattail had little wispy seedlings sticking out. We'll keep watching it daily and take sketches and notes for our nature notebooks.

Cay:

Do these kind of things happen to you because you live in Cajun Country or in spite of living in Cajun country.

BTW, my dear SIL sent us (as a thankyou gift) a copy of Petite Rouge: A Cajun Red Riding Hood -- a GREAT retelling of the classic. My dh lived in Baton Rouge for many years and did a pretty good job with the accent -- the story is a treat and the twists are worthy of any Cajun story!

Blessings,

I believe that happen to us because we home educate.

Do cattails only grow down south? or does anyone else further north have them?

I just discovered that they are edible and this site has recipes for Fried Cattail Rice and Raw Cattail Soup (scroll all the way down).

I'm too chicken to cook it. Perhaps I'll try it if Macbeth ever comes down for a conference visit.

Mmmmm! Cattails! We have em, but they are being pushed out by Fragmites, a European invader (maybe why you oughtn't pick them). I love cattails, as the plant is almost entirely edible--roots, shoots, pollen, and all. The dry heads can be used to start fire if you are the flint-n-steel type, or efficient with a bow drill.
