Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Today our new Nature Study Group held its first meeting, and it was fantastic!

We had about 15 families show up and we all went on a nature walk together at a local nature preserve, using a checklist I put together as a guide. The kids were so enthusiastic, it was great to see! They all had their notebooks and cameras and little specimen containers.

Our theme for September was "Signs of Fall" and we made it a scavenger hunt. I posted the checklist here in case anyone would like to use it with their children or nature group.

I had a lot of fun leading today, but each mum will take a turn organizing a month. So, for example, in October we will be led on a bird walk, in January we'll look for animal tracks in the snow, and in March we'll have a maple sugaring demonstration. Fun!

I'd love to hear how your nature study is going this fall. Any news to share?

Your Nature Study Group sounds wonderful. We have what we call "Nature Monday" in our backyard every week (just us), and it's something we all look forward to. Scavenger Hunts are our favorite! My 8 yo daughter especially likes it if I include "something surprising or unexpected" on the list--I love listening for the excited little gasp,"This is it, Mom! The exciting and unexpected thing!"

I wrote about this past Monday's experience here. I like to stay home for this, but there is a Nature Preserve about an hour or so from here where the chickadees will eat right out of your hand, and that feels downright miraculous to me! (I've also come across a book--if I can find it I'll link to it--(yes! here!) that talks about getting birds to eat from your hand in your own back yard!)

And we have a Maple Sugaring Hut not 15 minutes away that hosts an open house on what the state maple growers association calls "Maple Weekend" (used to be just "Maple Sunday" but I guess it's gotten pretty popular!) The place we love to go to is run by a man who just loves talking about how they do it and the technology involved. Really interesting stuff!

I know next to nothing about nature studies, so everything is as new and fresh to me as it is to my kids--what a joy to be able to experience all this together!

Eileen

Thanks, Dawn, for the update and especially the list. I am doing a St. Francis Day next week and was looking for something nature-ish to do along with our book and craft activity. The scavenger hunt will be poerfect and I don't have to do any work putting it together!

Oh, Eileen, I am very eager to try that book! Angela's daughter found it helpful!
