Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I just received my member's copy of In The Field, published by the Field Museum of Natural History here in Chicago.

In it there was a wonderful feature about a monumental project to document all life on earth (known thus far) in an on-line Encyclopedia of Life (EOL). There are other similar efforts out there, but this is the only one I know of that is of this scope and that is intended to be a teaching and learning tool for scientists, educators, students and the general public. If you're interested, you can visit the site here

It's going to take several years to be fully functional, but what an incredible resource for us all!

I was reading an article on this the other day at the Botanical Gardens and was flabbergasted to learn that as they are documenting animals they are finding mimic species. I knew about mimics in the Insect world but not in the birds and mammals! How cool!

Actually, we may be talking about two different projects. Here is the blog to The Barcode of Life.
