I'm looking at these and wondering if there is much use for these for a 6 y/o. Do your children use these for teaching parts, or do they even get much use in your home? They seem to be for younger children, but I haven't read up on the extensions for them, so there may be more uses than I am aware of.

So...order these, or pass them up?

I just ordered some insect puzzles for this next year, to go along with our science program. I'll let you know how it goes, but it might be a while, since I don't even have my order yet. I would also be interested in extensions if anyone knows of any.

I ordered these a couple of months ago. They are quite fun! There ARE different levels of doing them...

build in the frame
build out of the frame as you take them out
build out of the frame on your own

Drawing:
Trace around the parts to make their own flower, etc.
Draw the whole flower by looking at the puzzle, no tracing.

I also ordered the parts-of-a-flower, leaf, tree from Montessori Services for $2.50 (for all 3) to use in conjunction. They match the puzzle piece to the card, trace the piece and use the card for copywork.

We also have used the puzzles when looking at different REAL flowers, to identify the parts and talk about how they are different.

You can also make little booklets that have the same picture as the puzzle and cards, one uncolored picture on each page. The child colors in a part and writes the name below (copywork from card), making his own "parts of a ..." booklet.
He can match name labels to puzzle pieces, using the cards as a control.

Okay, so the puzzles really are "parts of" puzzles---not just leaf, horse, or butterfly puzzles? I'm sorry to sound so goofy, but I wondered if the puzzles really are broken into sections according to the cards I've seen for sale. Does that make sense? (Hmmm, I'm not even making sense to myself here...

)

Right. They are the PARTS OF....ie: stigma, pistal, petal, etc.
Tree is roots, trunk, branches, etc.
We don't have any of the animals, but I'm pretty sure they are "parts of" with the animals too.

Our obsession with ladybugs lately, makes me want the ladybug puzzle

They are broken into parts, but not as many parts as the cards.As far as acuuracy and detail goes, the botany ones are the best, followed by Zoology.
I am actually quite disappointed in the insect ones. They are not divided into many parts at all, only 3 or 4. For example the butterfly is divided into 3 parts. One part includes both left wings one includes both right, and the third includes all 3 body parts and antennae. The legs are not pictured at all. There is no way to learn parts from that. And the wasp is inaccurately drawn.If I had it to do again I would skip the insect ones. As it stands, I am thinking about getting my scroll saw out and trying to cut them up a bit better myself.

It is only 4 parts.Legs, legs, body, and head. This is problematic because in a real ladybug the head is partly concealed by the pronotum, but the puzzle just shows one shape here. It is inaccurate to call it the head, but if you don't, then where is the head?
I don't mind simplification, but I just hate to oversimplify to the point of inaccuracy.

Ugh. I need to let it go, I know.

That's why I wondered about these puzzles. I'm trying to whittle down from my list what's really a want or a need, and what we'll get the most from.
