Does anybody know of a hands on project (Theresa?!?!?!) to teach children how we get power from water?
I understand we could build a water windmill or wheel, but how do I make that water start power?

we recently purchased a small rocket that converts water into the hydrogen power it needs for propulsion. we got it wal-mart for about $19. dh loves these things so the kids have had experience with lots of them and were amazed that you could get 100 launches out of 2 cups of water. could launch some fun rabbit trails on the possibilities of water power.

Depending on the ages of your children, there are several things you could do.
I think this is the very best project:build Your own hydro-electric generator. I would say this project is for middle school on up to high school level. I am actually thinking of letting my son have a go at it this year. I think he can do it with a little help.

If you are working with younger children, you could make a simple water wheel, and then just explain that in a hydro-electric systems,the water is directed into powerful streams which are used to turn a turbine. The turbine is connected to a electric generator. The generator makes use of electromagnets to produce electricity.
