Any ideas for a friend of mine wanting to expand her dc knowledge of science? They are in K and preK. She never really studied science in school b/c of moving she tended to hit the year the school concentrated on Social Studies. I think she feels ill equipped to give her ds a real education in science.

The One Small Square and One Very Small Square books are nice. Of course, MacBeth's website has TONS of suggestions for the different fields of study, and many picture books are included. You can find her Elementary Science page here, and can link to her many other pages from there.

I would think that in K and pre K, I'd just read good books about animals, plants, trains, machines, etc. Chickens aren't the only one is a great picture book inro to oviporous animals. Lots of exposure - go to a local science museum. We have a free cook's science museum nearby which displays animal life (including evidence of damage by termites). Then when the child is a little older, Behold And See is the best elementary science I have ever seen. It is sold by CHC. They also sell a real inexpensive guide for using library books for science intro. The idea is a rudimentary exposure to classification of plants and animals - but light and beautiful and really getting out in nature helps. Field guides also help.

Both of my boys (age 7 and 3) have loved the Magic School Bus books. I did record the videos off TLC network, which are nice, but they read the books more. Joanna Cole has about 8 that are just great, then some other secondary authors have written the books based on the tv shows and these are not nearly as good as Ms. Cole's.

Also for science, we have gone to our local science museums, read lots of library books, and we always find something interesting outside (esp. in spring, summer, and fall.) We draw some of those things.

I recommend the Usborne books, too. They have lots of good science titles for all ages.
