Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm looking for ways to incorporate my son's love of rollercoasters with real learning. He is 12 and has always loved to build things....especially using legos.
Recently he used k-nex to build a rollercoaster and is spending hours running the coaster, then tweaking it a bit, and running it again.
Any ideas on how to keep this interest going and using it for more learning?

Thanks !!!

Rollercoaster Physics -design your own rollercoaster on-line. Physics glossary at is relates to rollercoasters and some history also included here. Just focusing on physics of coasters could take you on interesting rabbit trails. Here's an additional physics site. And another site

Rollercoaster History - it's intereesting reading about the history of the coasters themselves, but could easily be linked to what else was going on in the world/US during the particular periods mentioned.

Geography - could map locations of famous rollercoasters

Fun (but still learning some) -Rollercoaster Tycoon game

How about traveling to some of the older roller coasters? How far is Cogan Station from Altoona, PA? That has the one of the oldest operating wooden roller coasters in America, at Lakemont. It's called "Leap the Dips."

I've seen some program on PBS about the roller coasters in America. I found this link for a NOVA program.

To followup on Mary M, this has a list of many Create Your Own roller coasters.

Thanks for all your suggestions and links. We're planning to use the "create your own rollercoaster" site today.

We do live fairly close to Altoona....about 2 hours. We live alot closer to Knoebles which has one of the top 10 rollercoasters in the country and we usually make a trip there at least once each summer.

Jackson has built many amusements parks using Rollercoaster Tycoon.....he spends hours on that game. He's really very good at it. Maybe one day he'll own his own park !!!

My husband is from Altoona, so that's why I mentioned it. We go up there to visit his mother quite frequently. Our son is getting old enough to start enjoying the amusement parks.

That's neat about your son. Does he also play with Legos extensively? My one nephew can really create, spends hours. He's really got an engineer/architect bent.
