I've got my Tobin's Lab catalog (probably within my top 5 favorites) at the ready. I thought all we'd be doing until harvest time is botany the natural way, using Susan Lovejoy books and gardening our little hearts out. As I browse through the catalog, I see this Kim Wright Unit Study. Will this help me to reinforce the study of plants? Or will it be overkill?

We just finished ~ I have to laugh at the word finish because we're far from finished ~ the Stratton House Bird unit. This unit was simple and there was high interest. I don't suppose we learned as much as we *could* have, using another unit, but we learned more than I would've thought to pulled out of thin air. One of my kids, the one I least expected to, took OFF with this unit and is building and buying everything bird-friendly he can. So these units seemed to spur interest. But some units can flop miserably.

Any ideas?

Tina,
Last spring, I was pregnant and very sick. "All" we did was gardening for a time. Here'sa loosely written unit study. There are also lots and lots of gardening books listed in the sidebars of our online nature journal.
We have the Kym Wright study for high school botany and Michael abandoned it without finishing. I have enjoyed using Apologia's Botany book as a spine for everybody.

Tina, I guess I am just a little confused about your question, which is why I hesitated to answer.

When you say "Is gardening enough?" do you mean:
Is it enough for a fun unit this season? Then my answer would be yes. Especially if you follow a few rabbit trails when interests pop up, do some sketches in notebooks, involve dc in planning, chart growth, etc. You can make a wonderful unit without purchasing another single thing, outside of seeds, fertilizer, and garden tools!

If, however you mean:
Is it enough to cover all that your children need to know about plants through high school? Then I'd say no. And I'd be glad to help you outline other areas of study.
Can you clarify?

No, I'm not talking about through high school. Just something we can do from planting to harvest of this year.

But I'd be willing to listen to any ideas for high school, since we're headed in that direction.
