Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I love spring! It's my favorite time of year, mostly due to all the beautiful things that are blooming. I have a tiny yard, but have tried to plant my very favorite things in the limited space. Here's what's blooming/growing now:

My redbud has just finished blooming - it was beautiful! - and now the leaves are beginning to bud.

I have two new lilac bushes that each have one bloom on them this first spring. They smell great. Here's hoping for lots more next year.

My azaleas (fuschia colored in front and bright coral in back) are just getting ready to bloom.

In the front azalea bed, we have brand new grape hyacinths growing. My 12 yo planted them entirely by herself last year.

My crabapple trees are blooming like never before. Dh is very proud of those trees. They started out as 10 inch long sticks ordered from the National Arbor Day Foundation and are around 10 feet tall now. The blossoms reminded me of the Betsy-Tacy books. Remember Betsy's argument with her teacher, Gaston, about whether apple blossoms are white or pink?

{Edited to add: I had originally written that I got the trees from the Audubon Society.    Later I realized, "No, they are all about birds not trees!"}

My biggest disappointment was my Bradford Pear tree, which some of you here helped me decide on last year. I had assumed it would bloom this year and we got nothing at all!   Do they take some years before they begin to flower?

So, what does Springtime in your yard look like???

Irene,
Your yard sounds beautiful.
Wish we could see pictures of it... . On a blog perhaps?

I'm sighing as I think of your lilacs...they are my favorite and I've never had a lilac bush. I'm already coveting my neighbors blooms
Our azaleas are in full bloom too-lots of peach and pink which are nice. My favorite now is the huge bleeding hearts plants-they are gorgeous!

Irene, your garden sounds wonderful! And Cay, the pictures of your garden are lovely.

I was so surprise today to discover that my John Paul II rose has tiny buds on it. Our Lady of Guadalupe has put out more shoots, but no flowers as of yet. The lavender has come back, and my calla lilies are poking through the compost. My favorite peonies are knee high, and I predict they will bloom sometime close to Mother's Day.

The Old Blush Shrub (picked by my ds because it is from Monticello) has been flowering for quite some time now. It covers one corner of my herb bed and has managed to survive a freeze and a terrible hail storm!

The rest of my herbs are starting to bloom--sage, oregano, fennel, and rosemary. I think that I lost my tarragon and thyme to the winter weather. Oh well, the Herb Festival is just around the corner.

We just created a new garden space in the back yard. I am looking forward to a new adventure soon. I love springtime!

Oh, and I forgot to mention that my strawberry plants made it through their first winter. I planted them last summer after reading Lissa's great post on them. Of course, she ended up with a riot of them . . . and I have spindly plants barely clinging to life . . . but I do see one flower, so I am looking forward to at least one berry . . . if one of the rabbits in the neighborhood doesn't beat me to it!
