Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Anyone out there have suggestions for raising ducklings? We are the proud owners of two bantam ducklings. They were Gabriel's sixth birthday gift. We have a small pond in the backyard for them ot swin in and an enclosed "chicken run" for them walk around in. In the evenings they are being housed in a cat crate for safety until they are a bit larger. Any suggestions from expereienced duckling owners welcome. Colleen

They are messy, but I love to watch them. Plus they repel snakes
I pretend I am Beatrix Potter sitting outside watching them waddle around, I close my eyes and dream of a lovely quiet English countryside......OK wake up, I have a yard full of poultry and goats, dogs, and children

We have a large yard (not quite a farm but we like to pretend it is!)and there is plenty of space for them to waddle around as well as a small pond to play in. Right now the big concern is teaching our Great Pyrenees and mice-hunting cats that they are not appetizers! We are not letting them roam around the yeard just yet because they re so small and we are keeping them enclosed at night. I know they will grow quite quickly but about how long until they can defend themselves a bit and be free to explre some? Also, what do you use for feed? We have some starter feed now, but don't know exactly what to get when it is time to move to pellets or grains. We are creating a separate duck journal from our nature journals...I wish I could send you all the moment of amusement as I watched Gabriel struggle to get them to sit still so he could draw them properly! he ended up with some age appropriate pictures of ducklings with small poop spots on the corner! LOL! Colleen

Depending on predators, I would say around 8 wks. would be safe.

As for feed I let ours forage and they eat the compost, and scraps. Beware they love tomato plants!

Watch out for weasels. Our drake was killed by a weasel at night in his chicken-wire cage (he needed to be enclosed in a box).
