OK, all you gardening gurus...my daffodils didn't do well this year. I have no idea how they were treated the last 4 years (well, besides being buried in 4 years' worth of leaves, etc. because my tenants never raked out flower beds). This year I had 4 blossoms, out of probably 20 sprouted bulbs. Should I feed them before everything dies back? Do something else? Leave them alone?

It is good to divide bulbs after awhile. That could be the problem, I would start there.

If you cut back the greens after they have flowered in the past, rather than waiting for them to die back naturally, they often will not bloom the next year.

Hahahahaha, MacBeth...I never cut back the greens, and my tenants pretty much ignored the flowerbeds altogether. We won't talk about all the amazing and disgusting things I found last spring, when I raked out four years' worth of leaves and etc.!

Perhaps dividing will help. If it ever stops snowing here, I'll give it a try! (We had snow on Holy Saturday, ensuring that our parish egg hunt lasted a total of five minutes...dd said, "Somehow I thought it would last longer!")

I did divide my hostas right before the cold snap; so far, they look OK.

I really struggle with the "past all risk of frost" thing, as I grew up in SoCal. I never seem to get the timing right...

In England, we had so many that I had to DIG UP some bulbs so that the others could grow in a more orderly fashion. They were taking over the whole garden! That couldn't be the problem ~ that they're overpopulating ~ can it?
