I don't even know if this is the right thing to call it. I have a ds who is interested in one day owning his own land, cow, chickens, a garden, etc...not for a living, just for fun.

I told him that if he does well in physical science this year (a 9th grader requirement in our state), he can spend a year studying something that really interests him and this is what he wants to study.

How do I even begin to build a high school level course and what would I call it? The only thing I know for sure is that I don't want it to include textbooks or tests! I'm hoping for narrations, reading living books or watching great dvds on the subjects, and some hands on learning (we can have chickens but not a cow).

Can you help?

How about 4-H and your extension office for some materials? I'm pretty sure it's not just stuff for little kids.

While I'm not familiar with the specifics of an ag education curriuculum I know it has to be out there. I graduated from a small rural high school and ag classes were a big deal there. So I thought you should check out the Future Farmers of America (FFA) to see if they had any info. In following links I found lots of ag resources.

One thing I found out is that today - the first full day of spring is National Ag Day (and this is National Ag Week) - isn't that a coincidence. This particular site has some amazing resources including this list of websites for teachers. They also have reading lists for children and other written resources for older students.

Anyway, it looks like a good bet is to search "agriculture education" in a search engine to pull up related info. Hope this helps.

These links look great, Mary! Thanks so much. I had no idea there would be so much available on the net. This subject is very very new to me (I'm a suburbs gal!

). Looking at this stuff, I think I need to talk with ds some more and find out exactly what aspect of agriculture he wants to learn more about first.
