Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Every spring hundreds of thousands of migrating Sandhills Cranes stop in Nebraska for about a month of fattening up for the rest of their journey north. Check out this site. The videos are neat--go to the bottom of the page. This site has a link to a live "crane cam."

Friday we (husband, five daughters, and I) went to the Audubon Society's Rowe Sanctuary near Gibbon, NE; we huddled in a duck blind for two hours and watched all those cranes fly in to roost on sandbars in the Platte River after a day of foraging.

Breathtaking.

Even if big prehistoric-looking birds aren't your secret passion, I think you'll find that the Sandhills Cranes are pretty cool. Their migratory stopover here in Nebraska is one of the top ten nature events in the country, I'm told--we get visitors from all over the world.

If you are near NE or coming through (until early April), come see! (Oh, and you don't have to be in a duck blind to see them. )

There will be a dvd, Crane Song, available soon from our PBS affiliate.

Fabulous! I used to live in Gainesville, FL and it was a big stopover site for sandhills also. Very impressive birds!

Wow, Celeste, what an amazing thing to see! You have inspired me to find out what kinds of cranes we have up here in New England.

Celeste,

We watched "Crane Song" last night, and my girls loved it. They're begging now to go to Gibbon! We've never been ... I think it's now a must.
