OK you all know now that I am way beyond normal in my fear of snakes.......I have spent the entire winter(kid you not) researching snake repelnents.
I recently read that Lime will keep the serpents away. With spring around the corner, we are already seeing many small rodents in the fields, so I KNOW the snakes are coming. Has anyone else tried this (Lime)? I am thinking of ordering a dump truck load....no I am not kidding, I am that freaked! Sorry MacBeth I love the great outdoors, but you know I think there is a reason they are always used as symbols of old red legs

My dh used to use a formula that he made out of moth balls and ??? It really worked! I will ask him about it and get back to you.

Molly, are you not worried about the sudden boom in rodent population if you get rid of the snakes?
Just curious, around here snakes earn their keep...

Can't help you with repellents, just to share I, too, am not a snake fan  (probably earned it from my dear mum who wouldn't even watch them on tv.  )

Usually the cats keep the snakes at bay around here. Also I have heard that guinea hens keep snakes away as well. (My husband is worried about rattlers here, but we have not seen any.)
I will say that the ONE class that helped me in high school was my environmental science class. That is the reason why I like science and nature today. My teacher had permits to keep endangered snakes in the class room, so we got to handle them as well as learn about them. Best thing that ever happened to me because since I have been married, we have lived in the woods.
Also, black snakes keep the poisonous ones at bay.

Found the info. on snake repellant. Search the web for Jerry Baker Gardening. he has a formula that uses moth flakes and lemon (?) that we have used and it really worked. HTH

Can't help with snake repellant although I know that moth balls will keep mice away.
I had to add that my ds has helped me overcome any fear of snakes I might have had. He has a passion for them and always has. Picture this: about 7 yrs ago when this ds was around 6 he was playing outside and yelled "Mom come quick". I ran outside and there he was, with about 8 snakes (gardner variety = non poisonous). He had one between each finger of both hands! UGH!!!!! Over the years I've relaxed about them quite a bit. Truth is, with all the corn fields in this area, the rodents really would take over without them. Now, if we lived somewhere where poisonous snakes were an issue I'm sure I wouldn't be so calm about it.

I was in Starbucks yesterday and saw a woman picking up a big bag of used coffee grounds. Someone asked her if she was using it to help her plants grow. She says it helps keep away snakes and rodents. Didn't know this, but thought of you, Molly!

Becky I have to say you are my hereo.....just reading about your son made my heart stop......my difficulty does not lie on the fact that some are poisoness, I just hate them!!! I prayed fervently yesterday to St Patrick to help me with this phobia, and if at all possible to drive the snakes from my property as he did Ireland

not sure in MI where you are, (and your ds is now old enough to recognize the poisonous snake in MI), but wanted to let you know our friends, in Sharon Township, near Manchester, have discovered a few rattlers on their property.
I admire your overcoming your snake-phobia. I am not a bug fan, either, and wish I could get more excited about their discoveries. I am sure it would help their nature drawings if I wasn't so squeamish!

Thanks for the information about poisonous snakes here in Michigan Stacy! I did talk to my ds about it and he says he knows. It's called the Michigan Rattle Snake. Knowing that he knows about it makes me a feel "a little" better. This kid has always amazed me. On our trips to Florida when he was only 6 or 7 all his older cousins would run around with him because he was the only one that would pick up the crabs, or whatever creature they found. They even occasionally asked them to take the fish off their hook if they didn't know what it was. He reads about critters so much, he knows what to touch and what not to touch, and he really shows no fear, only respect. He didn't get this from me - I'm full of squeamishness, and dh can be a little that way too!

My son wants to experiment with drums to drive away the snakes here this year
You might look into the mole repellant windmills... after all, if snakes don't like noise, perhaps they wont like those either!
The only other help I can give is just to make sure your yard is not an area that provides something they like (food, shelter etc).
