Dear friends,
Will you please pray for one of dh's brothers? He is in his mid-40's and is what dh's family has always referred to as "slow". I really think dh's family just never wanted him labeled, but I assume that he would have been labeled as developmentally disabled. All of his adult life he has worked as a forklift operator. He doesn't drive, but does live independently in a small apartment. His body is simply giving out from the physical stress of this type of work. They want him to work 12 hour days 6 days per week, and he just cannot continue.
I am so angry at his employer right now. It seems that he is being taken advantage of. He was accidentally given another man's paycheck the other day. When he opened it (thinking it was his own) he found that this recent immigrant who had just started there was making only a dollar less per hour than he is making after 18 years there!!!
He is about it quit his job because he simply cannot physically continue. This is all he has known for most of his working years. Please pray that he can find something else soon. If you have any ideas of things that someone like him can do for at least $12 per hour, please let me know. I was thinking of maybe a grocery store stock person. (I have no idea what that would pay.)
He called dh yesterday very upset and dh's heart is just breaking for his brother. He lives on the other side of the country, so we can only pray and offer general support. Please join me in praying!

Praying for your brother-in-law, Irene. What a frustrating situation with his employer. I'm sure that good St Joseph will intercede for him.
On a personal note, last year my dad's Parkinson's disease forced him to leave a terrible job that was literally killing him. I don't think he would ever have quit until he was forced. But it was the absolute best thing for him. Even at 63, he was able to find a much easier job that he really enjoys. In an unexpected way, the Parkinson's may have lengthened his life by getting him out of that job---it has certainly given him a better quality of life.
God can bring much good out of situations that seem difficult and even hopeless.

I am so sorry, Irene. It is sad that those who cannot defend themselves are so readily and frequently used. We are praying for him, that he will find work that will support him while helping him feel "worth" what each of us is worth in God's eyes.

Irene:
He will be in my prayers. From my experience, the key is finding a good employer. At my daughter's place of employment there are several grown men who are "slow"/learning disabled who handle general maintenance at the grocery store. Your idea is worth checking into.
Another idea that just crossed my mind is the home health care industry. Does he drive? My step-dad is recuperating at home after a rough surgery and is being cared for at home by my mom. Every other day a home health care employee delivers the necessary medical supplies to my parents. My mom mentioned this to me yesterday. She said he is an older gentleman (retired from his previous job) who does this because he loves it! Just an idea.
I will keep this in my prayers.

Irene -
This is just so unfair! We have a similar situation in our extended family; it just seems so often that *the world* kicks those who are already down. And usually these people with special needs are the gentlest, kindest people out there.
One thing that might really be of benefit, depending on which grocery store he worked at, is that some of those jobs are union, so that, even though he would need to pay dues, he would at least get some protection and have someone else to be his advocate.
We'll keep this situation in prayer.
Peace,
Nancy
