Dear Ladies,
Would you please take a moment and share what books you have found most inspiring and comforting for your spiritual life (excluding the Bible, I Believe in Love, and Abandonment to Divine Providence).
Thank you so much for any and all recommendations.

I goofed: I meant to put this in the "A Living Faith" section! Please forgive me...but you can pray for us, too, if you want!

The first inspiring book that came to mind for me Nina is 'The Hidden Power of Kindness". I re-visit that one often. (Oh, and I am indeed praying for you dear one!)

Praying,Nina!
I second Lisa's recommendation. "Life of Christ" by Fultoin Sheen...really any of his books. "Imitation of Christ" by Kempis. I am slowly starting to read some books by Thomas Merton. I love his way of seeing such beauty in the world! The writings of St. Louis deMontfort and John Paul II. The encyclicals of Pope Leo XIII b/c he truly understood the heart of the common man and saw how much the world was changing (not for the better). I know you said books...just tossing out what has helped us.
I am sure you will get many wonderful and uplifting book suggestions. Good thread!

Thought of 2 more...
Holiness for Housewives
Saintly Solutions
The Way~bought this on an OD retreat during Lent
Again, if I had to be with any one spiritual book besides the Bible I would pick Hidden Power of Kindness.

Help me here. My confessor told me to read this, but the opening chapter I was woefully behind and felt lost! I had to put it down! I felt like he was jumping into the tasks and putting them up right away without explaining, so I failed before finishing chapter one.
Should I try again? Did anyone else feel this way? Does it get better?
Now you know I'm not a very kind, patient or loving person!

Oh,Jenn! Stop it!!!
I think you should give it another chance. I didn't do the tasks right away either..really one month with a bad bout of cramps..I picked the book up and flipped through it for a bit..then I went to read it cover to cover..I like to pick out bits and pieces in a spiritual book to mull over...I am only about 10+pages in the "Life of Christ" which I have been reading since December. I guess I will finish it by the time ds is in high school!
Hey~I wonder if anyone would be interested in doing a book discussion on "Hidden Power of Kindness"?

Jenn, the book is a little disjointed. The sound to me like notes that were taking while meditating or something like that. I couldn't read it in big stretches because I kept trying to follow his line of thought and a way of outline the information, and I couldn't. But it is not a difficult read.
Give it another try. His thoughts are deep and beautiful and the angle from which he approaches kindness is fresh and original (at least it is to me-I know you are more versed in this kind of things that I am
) It it is truly one of the books that have more profoundly affect my daily life.

I have to second (third, fourth, fifth?) the recommendation for Hidden Power of Kindness. I first heard of it from Elizabeth years ago when she put together Transitions. My dd and I read it and it helped us both a lot. (She had just gotten back to homeschooling and was entering the teen years)

Thanks, Natalia and Marybeth. I'll give it another try. I think I was extremely discouraged and overwhelmed when I picked it up last.
And I'm up for a discussion. I need all the help I can get.

This book was given to me by a dear priest friend
Serenity of Heart
Bearing the Troubles of This Life by St Francis de Sales
I also love
Introduction to the Devout Life
I have Hidden Power of Kindness. I'm going to pick it back up after all of your praises for the book. I have never gotten into the book. I need to give it another try.

Thank you, everyone. Keep them coming!
Especially books that have a way of making you feel God's love for you in a real way....and in turn, ignite your love for Him.
(Not the self-esteem books, but you follow what I mean, right? I can get discouraged by some spiritual reading at certain places in my life, and kind of "give up" because I feel I am not up to it/able to do it...you know what I mean?)

Marybeth,
I think this is just what I need! I have this book next to my bed and I read it in bits and chunks. It sent me to the confessional recently because it made me recognize that I have been deluding myself by thinking I was a nice person.
I am having a love/hate relationship with this book. I love the wisdom and I feel that following the advice in the book is certainly a path to holiness, yet it is helping me see so many areas to improve my life. Sometimes that is hard to face.
If you start the book discussion, I am in. Thanks!
Blessings,

Nina,
You have been on my heart and in my prayers.
There are so many books that have helped me on my journey. All of Scott Hahn's books help me to grow in knowledge of Sacred Scripture.
I am still working on I Believe in Love. I could not get past that as a small child she had such a heart to want heaven for her parents because of her great love for them. In theory, yes, of course. In reality, though, I am greedy and want my loved ones with me for as long as possible. To have the heart of St. Therese... something to pray for.
I also enjoy the little CHC book, A family Journal for quiet time reading.
When I have had tough times, I always cling to my favorite scripture 1 Corinthians 10:13:
No trial has come to you but what is human. God is faithful and will not let you be tried beyond your strength; but with the trial he will also provide a way out, so that you may be able to bear it.
Blessings,
