Hi Ladies,
I had my routine 20 week u/s last week. When I went to my OB appt this week I was told I have a single umbilical artery or also called two vessel cord. The umbilibal cord should have 2 arteries and 1 vein, but according to the u/s there is only 1 artery. I am unhappy with the way that my OB is handling the situation but luckily have a great regular dr who has gotten me an appt with a perinatalogist in order to confirm I even have this condition. It is possible they just didn't see the other artery. If the diagnosis is correct, there are possible problems for the baby like heart defects or the baby may be small. There are other possible issues, but I think that they are much less likely. My appt is Wed at 9AM.
So, I have a couple prayer requests. The first is that no matter what we find out on Wed, that the baby is fine. The next is that I am able to find the OB that God wants me to have for the rest of my pregnancy. I am going to look into going to another practice, but our choices aren't very good here. My current dr and hospital is only 6 blocks from our house, so I am sad to give up the convenience, but I will go anywhere that is best.
Thank you so much for your prayers. I will keep all of you in our prayers.
Beth

Praying for you Beth. Please keep us posted. Where (approximately) are you in PA? Maybe someone can help with a Dr. rec.

Thank you for the prayers! I am in Scranton. There isn't much around here in terms of OBs. There is an NFP only practice in Harrisburg, but that is too far. I am open to any suggestions, but right now it looks like I have probably 2 practices to choose from (other than the one I am in). I plan to talk to the drs before I decide on a practice and hopefully the perinatalogist can point me in the right direction.

Praying for you and your little one.
I know it can be so hard when you don't have a good doctor to support you.

Beth, I'm glad to see that you posted this here! There isn't a better group of prayerful women anywhere. We are continuing to offer our family rosary for the health of my godchild!

Thanks everyone for all of your prayers; I agree there isn't a better group of prayerful women. I should add that it is Mary Ann's dh who is being the voice of reason in this whole situation and his help in the case has given us so much peace.

Prayers for you both, Beth. FWIW, my first dd had a very small second artery, and her umbilical cord had an offset presentation on the placenta (homeschoolers, sheesh! ). Normal is about two weeks overdue for me, and she came one week over at 8lbs 12oz. Prayers that the view was just fuzzy.

I will be praying for God's perfect order in this pregnancy.
I had the same thing with my Andrew (my last. He has some developmental delays and is about 18 months behind his peers in many things but the Dr. believe he will either catch up or eventually be at the point where it wont make a difference (as an adult) but that he will be a normal functioning adult.
All of his organs checked out fine but he does have one thumb twice the size as the other and we have had his bones and such x-rayed because there can be a tendancy to grow extra bones. We have seen Dr. after Dr. after Dr. and still have to see the geneticist in March.
I dont tell you this to worry you though because we are not sure if the delays are a direct result from the single artery or not.
Do ask your Dr. to be educating himself on this. We have an awesome pedatrician but even still he was not aware of all the areas that this could reach into. You have an advantage in that you know ahead of time. We didn't know until delivery. Also I had a really hard delivery with extreme blood loss and almost died as a result of Placenta Accreta which is not related to the umbilical problem so there are there were a number of things that we have been looking into with Andrew.
Above all, keep your eyes on your wee ones Creator!

Hi Beth,
I'll be praying for the baby and for peace for you during the rest of the pregnancy. Christine, a member of this forum, had a similar situation and her baby was born about this time last year with no complications or problems. I hope she sees this thread and jumps in (I think I'll PM her). Also here is the thread where there was some discussion and resources.
Blessings,

Beth,
My son was born almost exactly a year ago (Jan 27). He had a two vessel cord (what our doctor called it). My OB said complications were possible but usually 2 vessel cord babies are just fine. Anyway, pre-birth, from about 7 months pregnant to delivery, I had to do a NST (non-stress test) twice a week and I also had an extra ultra-sound around 8 months pregnant. Other than that, there was no difference in my pre-natal care with this pregnancy versus our others. But, as a mom, it made me pretty nervous about the health of the baby.
Anyway, the baby was born with a totally normal delivery and was perfectly healthy. He was our smallest baby, but 8 lbs. is not exactly small . Since his birth, he has been a very healthly little boy. He is a champion eater, and at almost 1 is close to 30 lbs. - our second largest baby at age 1. So, really, there was no problem with having the 2 vessel cord, which is typical according to my OB.
If you have any specific questions or want to know more, please feel free to ask here or PM me.
I hope this helps some. I'll pray for you and the baby.
God bless,
Christine
