One of my sister's is trying to fight the system to get the proper help for one of her son's who is a 6th grade special needs student. She has been seeking information to help him for a long, long time. She finally went out of state to get help in the diagnosis. The out of town doc has recommended that this child be homeschooled.
However, my sis must work, she struggles with understanding directions herself and she is extremely stressed as a single parent with a teenager who is also giving her some trouble. She is not sure what to do. She just found an advocate to try and get the schools to provide the services that they are supposed to provide, instead of simply giving him bad grades. However, she is concerned that this will make the school angry - and jeapordize her job (she works in the school). Her son is supposed to have speech therapy and physical therapy among other things and has yet to get it at the middle school. The teachers seem to be doing his work for him sometimes rather than work with him - and he is being assigned regular 6th grade work and expected to write in cursive even though the child is hardly reading. The child is coming home from school in tears everyday, being yelled at and has been told that he simply will not make A's even though he wants to so badly because he wants to be on the honor role too. The teacher's seem to think the law requires that they give special needs students the same work (just less of it) as regular 6th graders. Some of the teachers are calling him lazy. It seems to me that he should be assigned work that he can successfully complete with reasonable effort and then be graded according to this. The advocate seems to think the school is in major defiance of the law and is offering services free of charge because of personal experiences as a special needs teacher herself and a desire to keep other children from suffering from this same failure.
My sis also works at this school - and she seems worried that her job (which is the livlihood of her 4 children)might be in jeapordy because she will be fighting to get the school to provide the services that the law requires them to provide. She also worries about retaliation towards her son. She has already been frustrated by jobs that she has applied to that were supposedly open - and the system already had someone in mind so everything was an illegal farce and jobs were awardes politically.
She doesn't think she can homeschool, but is looking into hiring tutors (family will help her pay for these) and her ds could certainly stay at our house during her work hours - but she knows she must find someone who can work with him and his needs if she brings him home.
She really is worried about her job, what to do with the special needs and how to address teenage rebellion. She approved me asking for prayers here - so please pray for her to find the right answers for her special needs son, to be given wisdom to handle her teens anger and some relief from the financial stress and worry of life in general. Also pray for my dh and I that we will be generous in doing whatever God may want us to do. I'm afraid to volunteer to be the tutor as I know nothing of special needs and seem to have trouble juggling our own. But I don't want to see my nephew fall through the cracks - and have him beaten down in this very negative environment. Please, pray for discernment all the way around. Thanks.
Janet

Janet,
This does seem like a very difficult sitution. I wonder though if the school wouldn't get some money from the federal government to help cover the costs of educating your nephew since he has special needs. It might make it easier for the school if they get something financial out of it. I will definately pray.
