Marilyn, I'm so sorry you have to go through this. And it's unbelievable that these criticisms of you would be shared in front of your children.
Many prayers coming your way.

This is so sad Marilyn and I'll keep you in my prayers today and always. Is there a group of devout families you could get together with on Sundays or feast days for a dinner club or BBQs or something? One mother told me when her kids were having difficulties that she told them God is preparing them in the way He needs to right now to have some certain virtue they will need for their work for Him later in the world. I have always appreciated this advice and have often used it with my dc.

Praying for you. How difficult it must seem when the people who you expect to be there as a support are instead critical of you. We will be praying for you and your family

Marilyn we are in a similar situation. It is painful, to say the least. I'll be praying.

Marilyn, I could have written your post myself, except that the people in my life claim to be practicing Catholics. It's so sad and disappointing, isn't it? Not a day goes by that the situation in general doesn't cause me major anxiety, and it is particularly hard with the children wanting to know why we haven't seen certain people in a while. I will pray for you daily, as I pray for my own extended family situation. When I brought this to my priest he said that this is our opportunity to be persecuted for Christ. I do find comfort in that, but it still hurts.

Gosh Marilyn, Patty and Molly -- you're all in my prayers. Family is supposed to be where you can be yourself and all accept you. I'm blessed to have a mom and brother (and his family) who are all "like" us -- but our other siblings aren't but we try to ignore the insults -- which is much easier when you don't see them often.
Again, I'll hold your intentions in my prayers this week.
BLESSINGS!

Dear friends,
My family is much the same way, except they don't make fun of us to our faces. Family relations are just very strained and superficial. I always try to lift up my brother and sister especially during the consecration at Mass. I really LONG for my family to share the fullness of the Catholic faith with me.
I will remember you who are struggling in my prayers as well.
Dawn

Praying for you Marilyn. For what it's worth I don't believe you have to go to all the family functions or any for that matter. You don't even need to make a big deal about it just say you can't make it. Be selective of your time (don't stay for the whole thing) and treat yourself and your family as the treasure that you are. Sometimes people get in ruts and if you make it known (even subtley) that your not going to play the game where your the target, meanness finds another outlet.

Marilyn
I agree with Julia no way do you have to put up with that. Besides I dare say having had some family issues myself(different issues) you could be placing yourself in an occasion of sin, getting mad, etc. Is your mum party to this? Is she the reason you continue to go? If she is respectful I would tell her you are no longer going to put up with it but make an effort to visit her by herself. Praying.

Prayers for all of you with family troubles.
My mother's in-laws were very unsupportive for many, many years. They would attack her for all her choices in religion, number of children, homeschooling...the list went on and on.
As we started getting older, different members came to my mother and apologized for all of that. Their own families fell apart, not talking to each other, drugs, not marrying, no grandkids, no practicing Catholics. They could now see the fruits of my mother's labor. Her children were growing up, loving and fun, not stunted, but beautiful people, loving their faith, marrying wonderful spouses, bearing beautiful children. The contrast is startling...
I know it's not the same as siblings, but thought I'd just share a little glimmer of hope.

I'm so sorry, Marilyn. I think if it were me, I would opt out of family gatherings for awhile. These are things that we keep our children out of school for, the ridicule, etc. I think older kids and adults might be able to handle the persecution for awhile, but I'm not sure about young children. You could have your parents over to your home. Do you have a family in your area you could share the holidays with? This is never easy! You will be in our prayers!
