Ever since 9/11, the mandate from the father in this household is that we will not be ruled by fear. He flies in airplanes at least twice a week. When ESPN sent out a blanket "No one is bound by a contract; let us know if you want out" memo on 9/12, he responded by saying, "Let me know who you need me to cover. I'm on the next plane."
In my rational moments, I see his wisdom. We can be prudent but we can't be ruled by fear. And the Muslim extremist apocolyptic dates have flitted across my screen several times during this five years. I do okay...
But...my son will board a plane at Reagan National on August 21st. He has a layover in Philadelphia and then he will fly to Spain to represent the United States in an U-17 World Cup soccer event. He'll fly into the night and get to Spain on August 22nd.
I know that there will be three air marshalls on the flight. I know that all the cargo will be screened by hand. I know blah, blah, blah... I know nothing except that my baby is flying over the ocean on one of the most dangerous days of all. And though I won't let it rule me, I'm scared.
Please pray for him, for me, for all of us for whom life will never really seem safe.

I will pray Elizabeth and remember your son to Our Lady as I am about to turn in for the night.
It is a fear for all of us throughout the world - but it must me multiplied in the States - St Benedict Medal would be a sacramental for your son to wear - to protect him from all evil.
Still hard not to worry, 'cause when it comes to children, this is the Worry Queen whose writing here!  I find my antidote is Our Lady and her Immaculate Mantle.
The dates are very interesting and after the 9/11 (the date of the anniversary of the most decisive Muslim defeat on land - with the Seige of Vienna) you can never laugh these things off any more. I hope your son does well and enjoys this wonderful opportunity.

Dear Elizabeth,
I will keep you and Michael in my prayers. My two oldest (under 10 years old) will be flying to Switzerland in October. I believe that my husband can relate to your feelings, but I have found it easiest to put all of my trust in God and the Blessed Mother. If our children are meant to be kept safe, they will be because it is God's will.
It is only when we let fear take hold that fear wins. Remember what Our Lady of Guadalupe said to Juan Diego,
"I truly am your merciful Mother, your Mother and the Mother of all who dwell in this land, and of all mankind, of all those who love me, of those who cry to me, and of those who seek and place their trust in me."
Mary will watch over our children in our absence.

Elizabeth -- I'll pray for you and Michael. If this makes you feel any better, having worked for Delta AirLines for a number of years, the SAFEST time to fly is for about 2 months after ANY incident.
Just make sure that bottle of wine and fancy perfume he brings you back from Spain are in his checked luggage

The full text of Bishop Sheens' chapter on "Mary and the Muslims" can be found here. I know I was fascinated by this the first time I read it - even before 9/11. Thanks for the link MacBeth to the article you posted - what proactive steps to help us not live in fear. We need to pray fervently for the conversion of Islam through Mary's intercession.
Elizabeth, I'll be praying for you and Michael. I know I would be a fearful mother as well. I already got a knot in my stomach when reading Jenn's post, since we will be driving through Montana on that date (where the missing Egyptian students were supposed to have gone but never arrived).

A vocation director just spoke at our KC dinner Wed. night about Mary and the Muslims. He briefed us on Fr. Corapi's talk. It was the first I'd heard of it. Then I see this. What timing!
Elizabeth, did you read Amy Welborn's blog post: Take Heart about her youngest son's earache and her oldest son's flight? Again, what timing!
