We experienced quite a traumatic afternoon, today. My son, 18 mos, got some of his immunization shots yesterday. I was giving him Motrin, but apparently that wasn't enough. We were out, had finished shopping and driving home, eating our lunch in the car. He suddenly started into convulsions, in a seizure. We weren't exactly sure what it was...I was thinking it was allergic reactions, choking. After 1 minute of convulsions, he went into a slump and wouldn't respond to anything...but he was still breathing...that 5-10 minutes was just torture! We continued driving to the hospital, which was about 2 miles away...but it was so awful! The diagnosis is he had a febrile seizure, which means his temperature spiked too fast.
I'm a wreck...I've never had to deal with a crisis like that. We weren't sure what was going on, because he was happy and eating seconds before it started. I'm relieved he's okay and no damage done--he's back to normal.
Anyway, I could use some prayers...thanksgiving that everything was okay, but also for continued strength for Mommy and Daddy and good health for our son! I have a few items of stress on my plate already...but don't we all?

Oh, Jenn, how unbelievably horrible. It was painful and scary just reading your story. I can only imagine what it must have been like for you.
I will say prayers of Thanksgiving for you, not to mention a few prayers that nothing like this ever happens again.

Oh, Jenn,
How awful! I can't imagine what you were going through, to see your little one go through that.
A couple of years ago, my brother-in-law had a seizure, out of the blue, and I still replay it with horror in my mind... I just so sympathize with a mother's heart witnessing her own child go through it.
Thank God he's alright, and I'll pray that it never happens again. Also, will pray that you can stop mentally replaying it....

How terrible! We are certainly praying for Gregory and for you and are thankful that it was nothing permanent!

Thanks for all the prayers. That's what I've been praying for. The image of him convulsing and not responding to me is so haunting. The thoughts that crossed my mind were things like "he'll never be the same again"..."here I took the risk for the vaccines and look what happens"...
He has higher chances of having more seizures when he has fever now, so we have to watch every time he develops even a slight fever. It's the sudden jump to a higher temperature, not the actual high temperature. So he can be at 98 and jump to 101 and that's the risk of the seizure.
But thanks again so much...having it happen on Holy Thursday made us enter more deeply into the Passion!

My oldest son had a febrile seizure when he was about the same age (16 months). It was from a rapidly rising fever brought on by an ear infection. I understand your fear and panic at the situation as that is how we reacted. It is such a frightening experience. Fortunately he never had another (he is now 16 yrs) even though like you said he could be more at risk.
My mother and mother-in-law were pretty nonchalant about it when we told them, since for their generation this (febrile seizure) was something they were more prepared for as a possibility. They were more likely to do cool cloths for fevers, tepid bathes, etc. than we are today.

All wise, but I was out on the road...didn't have all those mothering tools with me. It just hit us out of the blue. Of course, my mother wanted to know why I was taking him out with a fever! I rarely do, but I thought it was under control!
I just spent an hour yesterday chatting with the doctor on what to do if and when the next fever hits, the risks, etc. He said not to do a tepid bath because if he comes out shivering, that makes your body warm up, fever rise, again. But the cool cloths and cool drinks definitely yes.
I pray this doesn't happen again, but we were told the risk is higher the next 6 months, and to immediately medicate even when he has a low grade fever (which he has the past few days...annoying!).
Thanks again to all who prayed and gave advice and support. Even with 6 siblings and other extended family with multiple children, I didn't have much advice out there because no one has experienced this!
