Mariah was a miracle from the start...a conception that supposedly could not happen, a high-risk pregnancy, a premature delivery, and months of failure to thrive. At 7 months, she seemed to finally be rounding the corner. Yesterday, her momma laid her on the bed for a short nap, stepped out to check on her older children, and returned to find her breathing had stopped. The initial cause of death is SIDS. Its every mother's worst nightmare, and it has rocked our church community. I know the mothers on this board will be moved to pray. Thank you.

Thank you all for your prayers.
I cautiously ask this...if there is anyone reading these boards who has lost a baby and is at a place in your healing where you can write about it, I would so appreciate hearing what was most helpful to you. Its so hard to know what to do or say...or perhaps its better to do and say nothing and just pray? I feel paralyzed by my fear of causing more pain.

I will be praying Shawna. I'm sorry, I have no experience to help you with what to say but I'm sure someone will help you.

Hi Shawna,
When my friend lost her baby, I gave her a new journal. She later told me that she wrote in it often and was thankful I had given it to her. Chari had already told me about your friend, please know, we have added her in our prayers.
God Bless

Asking for Mariah's intercession for her family and also for Our Lady to envelop them. We are praying. There is a beautiful image of Our Lady with a small tear drop running down her face. I saw it on the front of a blank card once.

Shawna,
I have been thinking.........if you think this might be right......but, I wonder if the momma would benefit from some scrapbooking items to make a LIFE BOOK of Mariah's life? She will not be ready for awhile, but perhaps, you could help her to recreate her baby's life, in a scrapbook, so she will always have something to turn to when she needs it. And, as she makes the book, it will help her to share her memories, esp if she did it with someone, and work through some grieving.
Jeanne Condon lost a daughter who was just under one year of age......nine months maybe???.........and she has the most lovely book of her little Theresa. She shared it with me a long time ago. It was so beautiful, to how special this little life was, in her short time.
You could even just collect what was needed at Michael's or something like that.........
.....just a thought.
I could even babysit for you while you helped her, so she could share some of your tools and know-how.
Praying..........call me if you need any help, to help her,

Shawna,
I am praying for baby Mariah's family during this sad time. I lost my firstborn the day after he was born. Looking back, the friends I appreciated most would just call and offer help and prayers. They would offer to bring a meal or organize meals..but were sure to be considerate of my needs--not adding pressure by expecting me to call them and update them...They just kept in touch and knew that I appreciated their help...One of the things I treasure the most from Will's brief life, is all the notes and condolences that people wrote to us letting us know how much they cared. I have all these along with the few pictures we have of our baby, in a special place and pull them out once in a while and read them--after 12 years! So, perhaps sending a note or card every once in a while and encouraging others to do so would be another thing you could do...
God bless you for caring; we will storm heaven for this family.

Molly McGovern who was on this board and on a few other lists just lost her two month old to SIDS. We had a prayer request for her.
The depression factor is huge, and so any advice on how to help depressed people would apply here. You can't just "cheer up" or "look on the bright side" or "realize this was all God's plan." When depressed, it's hard to function.
I know Molly has mentioned the depression and stunned feeling a few times. In fact, she's been on my mind of late before you even posted this, Shawna, as she hasn't been online at all, but your post brought back her loss. I'll have to step my prayers for her and your friend.

I thought of Molly out of the blue 2 days ago as well. Yes, it must mean she really needs more prayers.
Shawna, I don't know what to do for a mother who's lost an infant. I've had good friends lose a 7 yr. old and a 20 yr. old. I think no matter what the loss, a Spiritual Bouquet card is always a good choice.
