Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Friends, please could I ask your prayers for a friend of ours, the son of friends in our parish, a homeschool graduate who's a rising senior in college? He had been ill for some days, I think with a stomach bug, and when he became dehydrated, and his parents took him to the emergency room, it turned out that his kidneys had stopped functioning.

He's been in the hospital for four or five days now, on dialysis, and had a kidney biopsy. We just got word from one of his sisters that he's being transferred to a hospital in a bigger city. Details are still pretty sketchy, but all of this seems very scary. He's an otherwise very healthy 22-year-old.

Please pray for his recovery and for his family as they continue in emergency mode.

Thanks so much.

Sally

Thanks for all your prayers. We get daily updates from his sisters, but they're mostly of the "waiting to find out more" variety. One friend who has visited with him says that doctors are thinking that when he had the stomach virus that all this started with, his white blood cells went crazy and started attacking his kidneys -- but no definitive word on that. Still waiting to find out more . . .

Anyway, again, thank you for your prayers. I know the family appreciate them and feel the power of all that intercession.

Sally

Thanks again for all your prayers. He's now out of the hospital and due to come home tomorrow, though my understanding is that he's still on dialysis. We saw his family at Mass yesterday, and his father said that his kidneys were slowly starting to function again.

Please continue to pray for him, but we are very, very thankful that things are improving and looking more hopeful.

He's home! His mom sent out a long email this morning expressing her profound gratitude for all the prayers -- the doctors are saying that he has made "unexplained" (ha!) progress and does not need more dialysis at this time. He will still receive chemo and infusions at least once weekly, and will not be returning to college this fall (his senior year, so that feels like a real blow, especially since he has had to work hard and sacrifice to be there at all).

So he can definitely use more prayers, both for his recovery and for his eventual return to finish his degree. Also, his mother said that her cousin in Brazil had lost her 19-year-old son unexpectedly this week -- he was in the bathroom brushing his teeth, and when he didn't come out, and the water kept running, she went in to check on him and found him dead on the floor with his toothbrush in his mouth. 19. I cannot imagine. Please pray as well for the repose of his soul and the consolation of his family.

Thank you again -- I can tell you that this family has felt wrapped in prayer for the last three weeks, and they are truly grateful to all their praying friends, known and unknown to them.

Sally

Continuing prayers for the first intention, adding prayers for the family who just lost their son.
