Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Mary Beth wears an orthodontic appliance at night. Often, she takes it out in her sleep and isn't even aware of it. And (sigh) often she sleepwalks. Usually, we can find the appliance in her bed in the morning. But this morning, we looked high and low and we can't find it. Now I'm afraid she was strolling around somewhere in her sleep and left it for the dog or something. The palate is clear plastic (should have let her get the neon one in hindsight). We so don't need another orthodontic bill right now...

Please beg St. Anthony to intercede.

Praying, Elizabeth. Did you check with the dog? I lost more retainers that way.

(Also, when I read the subject, I thought St. Orthodontia might have been an associate of St. A.)

That's where I think it went. How, praytell, do you suggest I "check" with him. More importantly, how do I get him to write the check?

Praying here. I lost quite a few retainers when I was young. That did not make my parents happy

My dear son SPAT his into the creek that ran REALLY fast through the village the day after he'd gotten his! Try explaining to an Austrian ortho -- who doesn't much believe in novocaine or tother painkillers -- how you need a new retainer and no, we can't come right back in becuase we have to reserve the van two weeks ahead of time and can she please send one to us? I made Joe call her -- it was a great learning experience for him and he NEVER lost it again.

St. Anthony, help Elizabeth and MaryBeth find the appliance.

We will pray for you to St. Anthony whom our family often invokes for the same thing. I wear a retainer at night to ease the pain in my jaw from severe TMJ. I must wear it if I want to talk at ALL the next day but in my sleep I have been known to throw it. On the mornings I have attemped to dispose of it, my poor husband has been late for work helping me look for it.

Did you check behind the dresser? I've thrown mine there before.

Found it! It was on the floor next to the computer. The theory is it was stuck in her hair during the night and she staggered in here half asleep to "check her blogs" this morning and it fell out of her hair without her noticing. I never thought to look here--the room is all the way across the house from her bedroom.

Thanks so much!

Praise God and thank you St. Anthony.
Love the funny retainer loss stories - I left mine on the table once after lunch and grandma cleared everything into the food scraps. After much worry and searching it was found outside in the cats' dish - licked clean .
