Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

2/22 Just wanted to send a positive update although prayers are still needed for us both. I know they are helping because I certainly feel more peace moving ahead. Although Scottish Rite still refused to offer testing or services, I did get the public school to do another complete evaluation next week! That's unheard of to get in so quick and will certainly save us the $$$ from going to a university or private service. Other things are falling into place now where I believe we can adjust his curriculum accordingly. We did have to add another layer of med for the tics that have increased from the ADD meds and although DH and I are so reluctant, at this point, we're hoping it's only temporary as he possibly transitions thru puberty. ? Anyway, I have also done much more introspection into my expectations and attitudes toward everything. It's still not easy but I appreciate all your support and prayers. Thanks ladies!

Some that have read some of my threads know how much DS (and I) struggle with his learning (and other) issues. I actually don't think we are dealing with just one issue. However, I would say since age 7 (he's now 12 1/2) dyslexia has been on my radar. When I looked at the symptoms then, there were so many but I was told "I don't think that's it". Well, I listened to the "experts" and did testing thru public school says "Oh he just needs to focus more". After that I brought him home to school and thought maybe he does just need 1-1 help. After realizing it's not JUST 1-1 help he needs, I went for testing thru a university 2 yrs ago said "he has a lot of markers for dyslexia but also the inattention". So we started tutoring there w/ the dyslexia program. Then I purchased the program and started using it at home. While it's a good program, it's just so time consuming and tedious to do with a whole 1 hour block uninterrupted 4x a week during what would be his best learning time (in the morning when dad's away and I've got 3 other kiddos to round up). Anyway, I've started looking at tutors but they want min 3 hours a week at $80/hr!!! ARE YOU KIDDING? I can't break our family finances to pay for that! So I applied to Scottish Rite that has a dyslexia center b/c at least they could provide testing (which from neuropsych would costs $1000s!) and maybe even some tutoring which would all be at no charge.

Well, I get the letter today that after reviewing his previous test scores, they think his learning problems are outside their area of expertise!!   To say I am SHOCKED and DEVASTATED is an understatement. I know he has other issues but at this point, the fact that he can NOT read well enough to even complete his basic math questions is so troubling to me. Yet I don't feel like I have the time to give to him to tutor in this area and obviously can't starve the family to pay for a tutor. Plus I'm not sure I am the best tutor for helping this extra special need. I'm not an expert at reading disorders. ??? And he has been on ADD meds so focus is NOT the reason he struggles to read. And while he is making progress I still don't think he reads beyond maybe a 2nd grade (maybe 3rd grade) level.

I called and left a message at Scottish Rite to discuss their determination and hopefully get it changed.     They're supposed to call me back probably next week so please pray that somehow I can find some answers. Somehow I can know WHAT to do to help him move forward. Somehow I can find the patience to keep putting one foot in front of the other and not feel like I'm spinning my wheels. This has been like this his entire "educational" life and I'm just so confused as I had prayed God would open this door and help me find answers and so far, still nothing.

Thanks! I just updated my title to more accurately reflect my thoughts which is really where to go, what to do, who to meet that can really help me guide him on this educational path. Also, I pray always that I can see him and the gifts God gave him...even if it's not in an academic, book setting. I struggle with that too.

Praying for wisdom and discernment in all aspects of caring for your son and for Holy Spirit grace to see your ds as our Lord sees him. Praying especially that you can find peace in all aspects of relating to your son. Praying that Jesus, Mary and Joseph will guide you.

Praying. We found a non profit group that did the same neuro tests for about 1/2 the cost--yes still a lot but there might be grants you can get, not sure. Then found an orton-gillingham tutor who worked with him twice a week at our local library for 2 years...and she was willing to work with us on her fee. Also, had the attention issues (many high functioning autsitic issues). After much home behavior tries he has been on a low dose of ADHD meds and at almost 12 is at grade level for reading and math. Still some tough days but have hope that things can and will get better!

Hi, Kathryn! My daughter is dyslexic so I know a little of what you are going though.

I highly recommend that you check out Easyread: www.easyreadsystem.com.

Yes, it is $125 a month, but that is far less than a tutor. It is an absolutely amazing program that your son can do almost by himself, always less than 15 minutes a day.

I cannot believe how it helped my daughter. She completed the entire course and the change in her reading - and attitude - is amazing.

Also, barring other learning issues, the inattention problem is almost always BECAUSE of the dyslexia, not the cause of it.
