Dear Moms,
Please pray for my dad. He recently accepted a job as a Fire Chief within the last couple years. He had a great vision and wanted to turn the department around so that it could really serve the community.
The city manager has asked all departments to do a considerable budget cut. However, as my dad pointed out, he is operating with a 1980s budget...he does not have enough firefighters. In his words, "there are more librarians in this town than there are firefighters."
Last week, he sent out one ambulance on a call...and then another call came in...he sent out the second and last ambulance. The department only has two ambulances, though it should have three times as many...
After the only two ambulances were gone, he got a third call for a pulseless-non-breather.
The only person left at the station was a mechanic...and him...he and the mechanic jumped in my dad's car and raced to the scene...without the necessary life-saving equipment...and the man died in my dad's arms.
My dad was devastated because if he had the right equipment, he really believed he could have helped the man and saved his life.
So...my dad is suffering terribly. He has been a firefighter for over 30 years...it's not that he has not seen death...no, he has seen his fair share of tragedy...in this case, he thought that what happened was so preventable...and something that could have been completely avoided.
On top of that, because he has made such a public stink about their lack of finances, he was punished and demoted. The person in charge of the fire department now is...get this...NOT A FIRE FIGHTER. Never has been. How is that for public safety?
He is really suffering here.
Please please please pray for him...and for guidance...and what he and my mom should do next.
Please please pray for his spiritual healing in this regard, too...because I know he has a hard time with wanting to know "why" God permits such things...that seem so preventable. I know it is a mystery based on faith--but his faith is fragile.

I am praying, too. I have read about situations like this one around the U. S. It's really tragic.

Sending prayers. This is where our money should be spent...not on wars and useless legislation. We have a similar problem here. Our volunteer fire dept is probably going to have to close because they can't raise the $45,000 it takes to feed and house the VOLUNTEERS. Ridiculous.

Many cities are in a similar situation. No money for facilities or vehicles. More 911 calls as police staffing cuts kick in and people are scared. Firefighters trying to plan for worst-case scenarios.
Perhaps we could consider pledging specific prayers (a spiritual bouquet) for our first responders and also offer prayers for all communities considering funding cuts for firefighters, police, paramedics, 911 operators and other first responders. This would be a great Lenten prayer intention!

Oh, dear this is terrible and I am so sorry your dad is going through this. Praying for him. I will keep him in my daily intentions. My brother is a firefighter so when I pray for him I will be praying for your dad.

Praying for your father Maggie. May our Lord bless him and your entire family with a rich abundance of supernatural grace to deal with this difficult cross. We always pray for firemen and others in the line of duty whenever we see them on the road and will certainly increase our prayers for the added trials they and your father face in these difficult times.
