The newborn daughter of one of my writing colleagues was born two days ago, at home (not by plan, but with a midwife in attendance) with her umbilical cord wrapped around her neck. They got her to the hospital in good time, but today she had a couple of setbacks. She nursed well yesterday, but didn't today, and was very fussy and unhappy.

This is all happening in the Netherlands (my colleague and his wife are ex-pats), and I know from personal experience that even if you speak the local language, understanding the local customs related to childbirth...wow...a huge leap of faith under the best of circumstances. Same with long hospital stays. And ideas about what people should do and eat while in the hospital (hint: bologna sandwiches!).

My colleague is asking for prayers...I don't know if he is a churchgoer (but, if he wasn't before, maybe now's the time?), and I told him I would ask for your prayers for his daughter, his wife and himself. (He is distraught, of course, and he also has to do all the birth certificate/citizenship paperwork stuff.)

Oh dear, that sounds so difficult....I know how hard it was just in a different state, let alone a different country....asking the Blessed Mother to undo any knots that stand in the way of good care, especially local customs etc....and the Holy Spirit guide all care for this precious baby, also tending to the spiritual needs of the whole family. (and that someone makes them a good, homemade soup, for Pete’s sake, forget bologna!!)

Mom and baby are in a private room tonight...no more NICU! There were a few setbacks yesterday (infection in umbilical area, mainly) but the hospital staff has been very attentive and baby is improving rapidly.

They will come home Friday if all goes well.

Please keep praying...and thank you so much for the prayers you have already offered for this young family. God is listening!
