I have some relatives who I love dearly but don't speak with other than family gatherings. They are both Catholic, non-practicing, married outside the church, and are finally ready to start their family. However, one has a genetic bone disorder - extra bones develop and can be mild or debilitating. It began spontaneously with his mother and he and his sister both needed several surgeries, and endured some awful pain. Therefore, he and his wife have decided to use IVF to test for this disease and pick embryos that don't seem to have it. I've spoken with his mother, briefly, but I'm not sure how much talking I can do or if it will help. I think I just need to pray, and I ask your prayers too, that these two lovely people will have a change of heart. My heart is breaking for the children they will be creating but not implanting.

Such a heart-wrenching decision! Praying for everyone involved. It is so, so sad to realize that sometimes people are so driven toward their goal that they begin to see truly questionable means as being a good idea.
