I'm kind of ashamed to mention my prayer request when so many of you are going through much worse things, but if you could spare a prayer it would be much appreciated.
My ds is going for his 2 year appointment tomorrow and I am very anxious about it. He is a small boy, 5th percentile for weight, but his father and I are both petite (and my family is very small, I am one of the biggest). His doctor fusses about this at each appointment even though we've explained he does he well and his size is consistent with our family's sizes. So I'm kind of dreading that.
But, also, his birthday was 2 weeks ago and he only says a handful of real words. He babbles all the time, but he isn't having the "language explosion" that is supposed to happen around the 2nd birthday. I'm very anxious about that as well.
So, if you could, please pray that his appointment tomorrow will go well and also for his speech I would really appreciate it.
Thanks so much and God bless you!

Will be praying for you! My one dd is on the small side so I get the same thing. Another dd has an appointment tomorrow for a well baby check - I'm anxious too (other issues there, lol)! Good to know I'm not alone and I'll offer up my anxiety for yours!

Praying all goes well for you, Caroline. I've been there and know your feelings. I think doctors just need to remember that some children are extremely petite, yet very normal.
My youngest is very small for her age. Was born at only 4lb 9oz and never caught up. She was 3 years old in Jan. and still only weighs around 24 lbs.
She also spoke hardly at all by age 2. I clearly remember sitting in the office of an ear, nose, and throat doctor for an appointment for another one of my children as dd neared the age of 2. We were waiting in the hallway for a hearing test to be administered. There was a poster on the wall overhead and it was a chart of how many words a child should know by certain ages. I think the minimal number to be in the normal range for age 2 was 15 words. I sat there counting on my hands how many words dd knew. (mama, dada, ball, etc.) I was relieved when I came up with just about 15.
Well, sometime in the past year it all clicked for her. She has caught up wonderfully. She speaks well for her age (just a few mispronunciations and a slight stutter every so often) and loves to talk. In fact, one of her favorite things to do is hear dh tell her made up stories about her, her best friend next door, and an imaginary friend who is a bear. Dh will often tell her to go tell Mommy what happened in the "Bobby Bear Story". She then comes and narrates the story back to me and does an unbelievable good job of it for her age. She also loves to sing and has learned many more children's songs and folk songs than my other girls ever knew at age 3. Finally she has picked up counting all on her own. I've never worked with her on this. She counts to 10 perfectly and proceeds to 20 with only a few missing numbers. (Do I sound too much like a proud mama? )
I relate all of this to encourage you. I wish I could have seen a year ahead when she was turning 2 and caused me such worries. Hopefully that "language explosion" will happen soon for your son. But from talking to other moms, I think that sometimes it doesn't happen until well past 2. Please don't be discouraged.

Oh Caroline,
I know exactly how you feel. I've been putting off dd's check-up for weeks. I finally called and made an appt. for next week. She's been below the 5th% and at her 16 mos. she slid off the curve. I had to see a new doc in the practice and he actually told me I may have to wean so she'll be hungrier for food . I told them Mary M was my LLL leader and I would consult her and get back to them.
I will be praying for you all!!

Caroline, I know what you're going through! My oldest dd didn't even register on the chart for height or weight until her 3 year well-check. She was healthy and I tried not to fret about the check-ups, but it's hard when it's your first child and you don't have any basis for comparison.
And neither of my big boys spoke a single word until after their 2 yr check. The doctor gave me a VERY hard time when I brought my 2nd ds in and he wasn't talking. They happen to be 6 and 8 now and talk incessantly . I know this is a hard time, though, wondering when those words are going to come. My little guy, 19 months, says nothing. He understands everything and knows a few signs, but truly no words.
I pray everything goes well for you both today, and please try not to worry about what the doctor says.

Thank you, everyone, for your kind words! Ds's appointment went very well. The dr was happy with his weight gain (yea!) and isn't too concerned about his speech. He is meeting all of his other milestones with no trouble. She did suggest we contact Early Start to get the ball rolling with speech therapy. She figures if he doesn't start chatting on his own then this will help and if he does start talking then we can just cancel the therapy.
She was concerned about his eye though. We mentioned that his right eye was kind of lazy and she said it's strabismus, where the eye crosses out. She's referring us to a pediatric opthamologist. He will probably need a patch, posssibly glasses and if those don't help we may be talking surgery. We'll know more once we meet with the opthamologist. So if you could say a prayer for his eye too, I would be grateful.
Thanks again for all of your prayers and comments. They are very comforting.

Glad everything went well, Caroline. Ironically my same 3yo dd, who is so small for her age and needed extra time to begin talking, also had eye crossing (toward the middle) starting last Fall. She is now in glasses. I know the worries associated with that too, so I'll pray for Matthew's eyes too!
