If you could please pray for my 3yo. We were on a farm tour today, and he had his back to (what I thought was a chicken--city person that I am), but it was a rooster...who decided to run my son down (my ds back was turned on this bird), jump on his head and scratched and pecked him mercilessly. I just had major surgery and couldn't run to him...my dh was too far to get there before the rooster did quite a bit of damage.
He is ok, but his face and head are bloodied and scratched, though, it could have been much worse...he could have gotten his eyes, and thankfully, it missed his eyes.
I am traumatized. My 3yo is traumatized. The scratches and piercings are starting to look infected...please pray that these do not get infected...and if you could, please pray that he is not permanently scarred (physically and emotionally).
I have to say that I am a bit angry because this was an advertised farm tour day. There were a ton of families there...and to have a rooster roaming about in the yard by the house with the kiddos around is not a good idea at all...and after we told the owners what happened, they said, "Oh, yeah...that rooster is a mean one." And I'm thinking...if you knew that, why would you not move him before all the tours and everything started?!?
Please pray for our little family. I know it doesn't seem like a big deal, but believe me, it was a horrible sight to behold as a mother.

Oh my goodness, Maggie! I am so so sorry. I just can't imagine that being anything but traumatizing ESPECIALLY for a child so young.
(speaking as someone who was attacked by a cat years ago and having a 3yo who was pounced on by a dog)
You certainly have my prayer!

I read this and my eyes welled up with tears. Our now 14 year was attacked by a rooster when he was three. It actually punctured his eye lid. I prayed hail mary's all the way to the emergency room.
He is fine now! You'd never know.
I will pray for your son to heal up from the wounds and trauma.
Would he let you put a little iodine on those areas? I love iodine. It seems to take the redness of a start of infection right away.
What happened was a big deal and I'm sorry for the lack of professionalism at this farm!
Praying!

So...the farm emailed this morning to ask how my son is doing.
I don't even know how to respond. I am still very upset by the whole thing. It was super traumatic for us all to see...the incident itself put a lot of tension into our home this weekend. The whole incident just keeps playing over and over in my head.
Granted, the scratches are looking better, but if I don't have bacitracin on it pretty consistently, the scratches start to flare up. I think he'll be ok, physically, but honestly, we are all just scarred from the whole thing.
How on earth should I respond to their email? I'm not exactly level-headed right now...

why not tell them what you told us here.
That you're still very upset.. and you keep seeing the attack on your son over and over.
That physically he seems to be healing but is still upset about the incident.
You might even put in that you hope they've done something with that bird so that it can't happen to anyone else. After all if it was a dog that attacked, it would be put down.

I have a 3 yo son and a mean rooster. :o) We are making plans to get rid of "Agent Orange" soon. He is cooped up, but has gotten out. My 3 yo is not afraid of our other rooster or the hens and I'd like to keep it that way. We would definitely kill our bird if he hurt anyone. The best place for a mean rooster is the pot! :o)
That said, none of us can really make suggestions as we didn't witness the incident or read the email contact. I suggest you pray about it. Also, put yourself in their shoes and decide what you would have done if your animal had hurt a child. I'm sure you will know just what to say.
Praying for your little boy.

If the farm had free range chickens the rooster was kept to defend them. I do not know what goes on in a "bird-brain" but your son was preceived as a threat. At 3 years old he is taking his cues from you. He honestly is not likely to remember the event if not reminded. His memory will be what he has been told. I know it was scary for you to see but you need to be calm and upbeat for ds. Prayers and Annie

Oh, how awful!!! Praying for a speedy, full recovery!
What is it about 3yolds and roosters? My dd was attacked by our rooster on our farm when she was three. As a mom, it was horrific to see and I can still picture it in vivid slow motion in my mind, 17 years later! But my dd (age 20 now) remembers nothing of it. I hope that provides some reassurance for you.
Our rooster, btw, lost his head within minutes of the attack. Do NOT get mama angry! We had chicken and dumplings that very night!

LOL. That is so funny you say that. I was so angry that I almost suggested he be dinner for the evening. I wasn't sure how that would go over, though...but since they were already processing chickens...why not another?
Trying to calm down. Dh has told me to give it a couple days.
The whole thing was so preventable. There were no hens around for the rooster to defend since they were in another part of the farm...just two roosters loose. And the fact that they identified him as a "mean one" was like salt in the wound.
I do need to calm down...
Thanks for the reassurance that this will (hopefully) not be a memory for my ds.

After our son was attacked by a rooster (which was on someone else's property when they refused to put it away) we were very traumatized.
Eventually we got chickens..but everytime we found out we had a rooster we put it down.
It is not acceptable to have a rooster running around loose especially when the owner knows it is mean.
They definitely should be called on it out of safety of other children that attend this place!
Your son is fortunate that he was not hurt even worse. These roosters when they attack don't let up easily!
Continuing to pray with great empathy!
