Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My dh has severe scoliosis (curvature of the spine) and has in the past had two major bouts of spinal surgery. For the past few years his back has been behaving very well, unless he overdoes things, but since Saturday he has been suffering a lot of pain in his upper back that we can't explain. It could be something as simple as a pulled muscle, but I know he can't help worrying that it could indicate a deterioration in his spine or something wrong with the metal scaffolding that keeps his back together . I would really appreciate prayers for the pain to ease up and that there are no underlying problems. Thank you!

The pain in Michael's back got worse overnight and we noticed that a tender spot at the top of the metal rod in his back was weeping. He went to Accident and Emergency at our local hospital first thing this morning and he has an infection in his back. Best and most likely scenario is that the infection is in a muscle. Worst scenario is that the metal rod is the seat of the infection which would require removal and replacement of the rod (and presumably the other rod that is joined to it). If that is the case we would be looking at a couple of months in plaster and up to six months of being unable to work. X-rays suggest that the rod is not involved in the infection, but the orthopaedic doctor he saw is calling in a senior spinal specialist to check it out. Please pray that this turns out to be just a simple infection that can be treated with antibiotics.

Dear Kathryn,

Praying so you can find the strength to be brave and that your dh only needs the antibiotics.

Thank you all for the prayers. Michael is still in the hospital. They are keeping him in overnight for observation and to try to get the pain under control. The spinal surgeon he saw feels that the infection is low grade and there is probably an underlying problem with his back that is likely to require surgery. Whether now or at some unspecified point in the future we don't know. Michael's usual orthopaedic doctor was away today but will be seeing him tomorrow to work out a plan. I think a "watch, wait and manage" plan is more likely than immediate surgery, but we will not know until tomorrow.

Kathryn
