Yesterday we got the official, nearly 2 yrs after the fact, bill from the military movers. $5100+ in over weight.
Today (this afternoon)I am going to be starting the calling and begging for a waiver/relief from the debt. PLEASE pray that they will be willing to do at least part of it. Because not only will we have to try and come up with the money for monthly payments (and things are tight as is), but they're going to be adding interest and everything else on top of it.
Just so you know, unlike most military families, we moved twice in our marriage--once, from Germany to NC, in the summer of 96. And again in the spring of 2008, from NC to OK. The first move, we had like three pieces of furniture and extremely limited household goods. The second move, we'd had 5 children, homeschooling, DHs ham radio and military gear, and 12 years of accumulated household "stuff". SO it wasn't like they were moving us every few years, so we pared down all non-essentials, etc. I'm hoping that they will be willing to work with us, given the fact they've moved us once previously, DHs status as 80% disabled, etc. We really cannot afford even the monthly payment, to be honest (if we didn't have four children in speech therapy, we might be able to swing it). Much less the lump sum.
Rachel

Praying, Rachel.
Please ask to see all the documentation, too, if they didn't send it.

Still praying...
I did a little checking and there is some kind of appeals process.
Also, any military/professional gear up to a certain weight limit is excempt from your HHG allowance; you could definitely claim that if you could weigh it.

Well, here's the problem.
Its been almost 2 yrs since they packed us up (March 11 & 12, 2008). Everything has long since been unpacked, sorted, put away.
We are aware we were over-weight. That has never been in question, truthfully. We *knew* we were overweight (just didn't know how much). We got a letter, went through the "please adjust the weight for pro gear" spiel (they took off 400 more pounds, which if you saw how much DH had, well, that's small potatoes after almost 25 yrs in)...
Apparently, I can file all of the paperwork I want, but we still have to start paying the installments nlt 3/24/2010. Period. Or, they will start deducting it in lumps from his retirement pay (really really bad juju there).
To top it all off...oh, Lord, have mercy...Dh comes home from work today with the glorious (NOT!) news that he will be having a change in his civilian job. Either he will be going back to the full-time job from...well, you kwim--dispatch, shift work, with benefits, but...well, tis horrible--worse than the military was...OR he will be working part time as the Emergency Management director (no benies, probably same pay, better job).
Other than the benefits, I don't have a problem with him working part time (he will be happier, will be home to work on the projects around here that don't get done due to time constraints, etc). But we get our only dental through the civilian job, and that goes out the window when he goes PT. Problem. We may be able to get onto military insurance for the dental as well, which would take care of that one problem...
Maybe.
But that's all a big !?!?!?!? right now, and I'm just sick. Our home in NC still hasn't sold (does anyone know of ANYONE in NC that can actually get the loans for a 3bdr, 1 1/2 ba, 1100 sq ft house in a large military town? Cause if you do--and I am *not* joking, LET ME KNOW!!!).
We're already revamping the budget--AGAIN--and will be going back to our "war time rationing"...
And I've got under three weeks to get all of the paperwork in order and mailed off to the offices in Indianapolis, to hopefully start the waiver process (which the man I spoke with gave me very very little hope of us actually getting a waiver).
Prayers, obviously, still very very much needed...

Rachel, I didn't do much research but it looks like there are several avenues of appeal/claim. If you moved from a 3 bedroom house it seems unlikely that you would be this much overweight (obviously I don't know how much they assessed you per pound, but the rule of thumb is 1K pounds per room in house). If you had several specially-packed items you can ask them to waive 10% for packing.
At the very least you will induce them to revisit the situation. If your allowance was, say, 8,000 pounds, and they are billing you for what looks to be that much again, how could you have even fit that much into your house?
I know this is rhetorical. I will pray very hard for all your home and job intentions...it is my best way of helping...but please don't give up. Take it to the GAO if you have to. You can't fit 16K pounds of HHG into an 1100 sq-ft house, unless you have lead furniture or something.
Sending prayers and hugs....
