The mayor was contacted by the Catholic Anti-defamation League and was told that the ordinance as passed was discriminatory (which it was, apparently Union members are thought by the majority of our city council to be inherently "safer" than pro-life advocates), and that the city would be sued if it stood. So the mayor vetoed the bill as written.
However, the mayor is still in favor of the bill as originally written (without the amendment to pacify the unions), and it is going before the council again, this month, maybe?
It seems less likely that the bill would pass now that the unions will again be against it, but the city still needs prayers!
We are also uncertain about what we should do. We feel that we should do "something" and are praying about how to proceed.
Thank you!
********
Tonight our city council meets to vote on a bill which seeks to outlaw sidewalk counseling outside abortion mills. Our family is attending, and I am taking literature from Priests for Life as well as a summary regarding the US Supreme Court ruling that such laws violate free speech. The bill is out of the Public Safety committee and is supposedly meant to ensure public safety, but they are making exceptions for unions, which leads us to believe they only seek to target Pro-Life. My council person seems to be the only one who is believed to not agree with this bill.
It is certainly an irony that this falls on the eve of the March in DC when many of the strongest pro-life supporters in the area are taxed and/or away.
I have a few succinct words prepared should I need to speak, and I ask for your prayers for the entire situation as well as wisdom for myself.

Thank you. I'm home. It was frustrating. Oh well. God is in control.

Fwiw, the prayers must have helped because my kids were perfectly behaved the whole time. Truly a blessing.

Oh, Lindsay...I'm so sorry to hear that it was frustrating...though not entirely surprised. I'm glad you were able to be there. I'll pray for the outcome!

I'm sorry I wasn't clear. They did vote to approve the ordinance. Now, sidewalk counselors cannot come closer than 8 feet to someone.

Oh dear, I didn't realize they voted last night as well.
How sad this is. I'll pray and offer my day in reparation.

Do it anyways and sue would be my advice. They don't have a constitutional leg to stand on.

Lindsay, praying for wisdom for you and for a quick end to this effort to stop pro-life counseling. Please do update when you have any more information.

I heard Al Kresta (Catholic Radio - Ave Maria) talking to someone about this, yesterday, I think. They were talking about the "protective bubbles" to be around the women, and I thought I heard them say that they had to be fifty feet away from the clinic, but if a woman agreed to talk, then they had to keep 8 feet away from her. The man that Al Kresta was interviewing noted that passing literature from 8 feet away is a tricky thing. I won't mention the city here, but maybe it was about where you live. I was apalled hearing all the details of the discussion. Ugh.
I will add my prayers for your city council, most definitely!!!!
God Bless,
Stacy in MI
