Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We had thought we were going to see them in mid August, but it got put off indefinately for dh's job. Our older daughter and I(we lived there until she was 6), miss them a LOT. And the Little Ones are growing up so fast, I want my family to see them, and enjoy these Precious Gifts.

I know many others have it much worse: husbands deployed, not seeing family for years, marriage or family troubles in the midst of their missing family and friends, etc.

I just don't want to lose the moments of joy we can experience right here in our daily life, longing for what must wait. I do love our life, we have a good life. I don't want to be sorrowful and moping when my husband and children need me! A husband goes through so much out in the world, they need to have respite with their wife when they return home, and I don't want my sorrow over missing my family to steal that away from us.

Please pray that IF it be God's will, maybe someday we will all live closer to each other, but only if it be for the best of ALL!

Thank you all for your sacrifices of prayer. May God reward you!

I've lived away from my extended family for 23 years, and I really empathize with you. It is very hard to be away from the family members you love so much. Having to cancel a visit is so, so painful.

One of the things we've found helpful is to focus on making our own family celebrations meaningful wherever we happen to live. We decorate our own birthday cakes (with widely-varying results ); we celebrate Advent and Christmas the same way each year; we don't travel at Christmas time so we can enjoy being with our own little family here. We even make the same menu for Easter...the one time of year you're sure to find ham at my house.

Another thing I do is write very personal (not long, just from the heart) letters to my parents at Christmas and on their special days, thanking them for all they've done for me and my family. Doing this each year has really deepened the communication between us (all types, not just letters) over the years.

It helps me to know that the Holy Family had to bear this burden, too, leaving everything behind to protect Our Lord. I know that the Blessed Mother and St. Joseph really understand how this feels...it is so consoling. Perhaps that's one of the reasons they had to travel so far - to help us.

I'll be praying for you!

Pilgrim,
We don't have to deal with an immense distance for traveling to see my parents, but the time between visits seems to be increasing because of various logistical challenges. We've all found it to be a great comfort to allow the children and my family to "video chat" with each other. They can see each other and hear each other's voice. The children can display their accomplishments - a piece of art, a poem recited. It's a nice way of staying and feeling more connected and there's less sadness from my parents when they feel they've missed some important moments. It's hard for my parents to see the grandchildren and recognize that they've grown a few inches and all seem so different from the last time they were seen - video chatting has helped this.

Can you look into video chatting? We do it directly from computer to computer through iChat...so can someone help me with a PC similar program? Can you do this with an AIM account? I think??? most PC's these days come with a camera built in.

God bless you, Pilgrim! May God make clear the way in His perfect time!

I know how you feel, Pilgrim.

Right now we are content to be living 6 hours away from my parents; this is much better than 17 hours away which we were for several years.

Prayers that you will (one day soon) live closer to those you love most. Jen is right -- video chat helps!!

Praying for you. Being an Army wife, I share this hardship. It has gotten easier for me over the years. I pray that you get to visit soon.
