Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Please pray for Bishop Joseph Martino, the bishop of Scranton and for the entire diocese. It was announced today that he is stepping down, but right now it is not known why. He has been a fearless leader of the diocese and has spoken out very strongly for life. He has met tremendous opposition during his tenure but has continued to speak the truth regardless. The diocese is losing a truly wonderful bishop. The orthodox members of the diocese are devastated at this news. And to add insult to injury, the Vatican has just accepted the resignation of the auxiliary bishop, Bishop Dougherty. He had reached 75 two years ago and just now the Vatican has accepted his resignation. He too was a fearless leader. Who knows what the timing means or if it means anything. Anyway, many of us are mourning today

Beth,
Originally from Scranton, I've been hearing all about this. We are praying here! We are especially saying the St. Michael prayer for his intention and the diocese.

Praying for those leaving and for those who will come to take their places. May the diocese receive strong, fearless, holy men to lead it!

Beth, thank you for posting this. I have literally cried over this and plan to write Bishop Martino a letter of gratitude...and invitation to visit AZ this winter . This Scranton-raised girl can guess at his suffering...Praying for Bishop Martino with all my heart.

Love,

Thank you everyone for your prayers for the Bishop and the diocese. There is a lot of hurting here right now (and unfortunately a lot of gloating as well ) It is hard to avoid his naysayers...they are everywhere. DD#1 and I had to leave a hair salon recently because of a loud conversation taking place between Catholics who were so happy about the Bishop's departure. Had I not been pg and sure that I could have spoken without breaking down I would have spoke up. Instead DD and I just left. The local media is relentless....I don't even look at it anymore. We cancelled our subscription to the newspaper about a year ago because DH and I could no longer support this paper, run by Catholics, that was so obviously against this holy man. Bishop Martino is an incredibly courageous man who spoke the truth and was such a blessing to this diocese. We pray that the Vatican sends us another Bishop as courageous as this one.
