Last month I posted a prayer request because of a tooth abcess and my fears about it. I finally went to the dentist and decided to have my front tooth pulled and have an implant put in in a few mmonths, while wearing a temporary tooth in the mean time.
I was supposed to have the tooth pulled this morning. Of course, I was up all night with worry and doubt, so I prayed to the Holy Spirit to guide me to make the right choice. Having a tooth pulled is very drastic and I wanted to see if there were other options when there is an abcess, especially as big as mine. The dentist did not give me any options, except to have a brige, which does not last as long as an implant, and my roots have dissolved to half the size, so I will eventually lose it.
Two weeks ago I had the impression done for the temporary tooth, but the dentist office called me at 7am this morning to reschedule for another two weeks because the tooth did not arrive in time for this morning's appointment and he is going away.
Now I'm wondering if I have this extra time to explore other options. Can a tooth be saved after a major abcess with a second round of antibiotics? (I have already paid $600 out-of-pocket just for the x-ray, impression and tooth) I was mentally ready to go in this morning at 7:30, but after getting that phone call I'm wondering if God isn't guiding me to do something less drastic.
Will you please pray that I might find an answer to this? I have already invested so much time and money on this.
Does anyone know if you can keep a tooth after an abcess? I'm off to google this now.
Thanks so much. You are always in my prayers.

Praying for you, Ruth. Also, I posted your question in the Our Lady of Good Remedy forum - hopefully someone will have some information to share with you.

Praying Ruth for an easier solution but if one doesn’t arise that all will be well with your original choice, praying for your discernment and wisdom.
God Bless

Dear Ruth,
Praying, Ruth! I was a dental assistant for 5 years. You can keep your tooth usually after an abcess. But it depends how much tooth and root you have left. Was the root canal successful? Did you have a regular dentist do this or a specialist (endodontist)? The front tooth has one root so it usually is a lot easier to get in and clean out then teeth with 2, 3, and 4 roots.
We almost always referred our patients to a specialist (endodontist) unless the dentist was absolutely sure he could get in an clean out the damaged or infected nerve. If part of the damaged nerve is left in, the tooth could get reinfected.
There are three options: extraction, root canal with crown, and implant.
Implants are more expensive.
I hope this little bit of information helps and does not confuse you! I know traumatic this can be! I rarely remember any patient that was not nervous in the chair! Praying hard this week for you, for direction, insight , and that you will be led on the right path!
