Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Family Institute of CT send out this announcement this weekend:

The Lawlor-and-McDonald-controlled Judiciary Committee has introduced Raised Bill 1098, a bill aimed specifically at the Catholic Church, which would remove the authority of the bishop and pastor over individual parishes and put a board of laymen in their place.

Read the bill here.

The bill is absolutely outrageous in its attempt to totally bypass the 1st Amendment of our Constitution. Not to mention that our state is $1 billion in debt & thinks they can do a better job managing the debt-free Catholic Church in CT. Sadly, the 2 men who introduced the bill are known homosexuals, so besides our state, they also very much need our prayers.

The hearing is this Wednesday afternoon, not sure what time. Thanks be to God, many, many people are praying. Announcements were made at all Masses this weekend and the diocese is arranging buses to take people to the Capitol.

Praying that other states don't have to endure such blatant usurpation of authority!

Thank you for your prayers!

It's unbelieveable and surely will not stand being so incredibly outrageous, I'll certainly be praying that will be so!

It is fairly outrageous that this has even been proposed, but it's really looking like it won't get very far. My DH is hoping to go to the hearing tomorrow.
I contacted my state Senator Handley , who VERY quickly responded :
"I too was surprised to hear about SB 1098 AN ACT MODIFYING CORPORATELAWS RELATING TO CERTAIN RELIGIOUS CORPORATIONS. I have several concerns about this proposal. I am concerned about theconstutionality and the precedent that such a bill would set. I spoke with Chairman Lawlor and McDonald this morning to betterunderstand the purpose of this legislation. They explained to me thatthe proposal was brought forward by Catholic parishioners in Darien whohad recently discovered their funds were being embezzled and were hopingfor further oversight. While I understand their frustration, I am notsure that government oversight is the appropriate remedy. In fact it ishighly likely that such oversight would be found unconstitutional.Instead, I believe it is the responsibility of the governing structurewithin the church to prevent the improper use of parish funds. Finally, I have spoken with many of my colleagues on the JudiciaryCommittee and I am confident that this bill will not be voted out ofCommittee and the sovereignty of the Church will be protected."

Still, the fact that any elected rep. would support something this ridiculous is quite jarring.

This is frightening...and so sad.    I'm praying for you families in CT caught up in this. May God grant you the fortitude you need to fight the good fight! And, may God be merciful to all of us!

The hearing tomorrow has been cancelled but the bill is still alive so there will be a (huge!) rally at the State House. The President of the Catholic League, William Donahue, is calling for the expulsion of the Senator & Representative who wrote the bill. His comments are here.

Glad to hear that sanity and the Constitution will likely prevail, but I will continue to pray.
