Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi Ladies,

I really need some prayer right now.   I have been struggling with Hyperemesis Gravidarum. We feel so blessed to have a baby again (since we have struggled with infertility for a few years now). Yet, the HG is getting worse, instead of better, it seems. My house is in a shambles (Christmas stuff still piled in a corner), and my poor kids aren't really being HSed right now. If it wasn't for a patient husband and a great mom, I don't know what I would do.

So far, I have been able to offer the suffering up and see the bigger picture, but honestly, it's getting harder. I feel depressed, and I feel like the worst homemaker/homeschooler/mom in the world right now. I'm so tired... We really need prayers...

If you have a moment, can you please pray for us...

Thanks,
Emily

Dear Emily - I am praying for you - I struggled with HG until recently - it seemed like an eternity. It has finally started passing. I so know how you feel - and lots of prayers coming your way.

Hugs

Emily,
I too suffer from HG during pregnancy. I spend the first four months non-functional entirely with a fair amount of time in the hospital or fed through a central line.

May I offer some survival strategies as well as prayers?

For your prayer life: Keep your prayers short. I can't even pray out loud for the family Rosary during this time. My favorite prayer when I'm sick, "Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on me and on the child I carry." Your suffering is so extremely valuable right now! Perhaps the most important thing you can do is to remember to offer it to Our Lord each day. With each pregnancy, I spiritually adopt a child in danger along with her mother. I don't know the child - I let the Blessed Mother take care of finding the most precious wee one that is in danger of being aborted along with the child's mother. And, I focus all of my suffering on that precious child offering up every ounce of it to save her life. I pray I will meet these children in heaven one day. It helps me to focus, so I offer my prayer strategies for you as you lie on the couch memorizing the weave of the cushions as I have done more times than I care to remember.

For your home: You must let this go...all of it. This is a season, and it will pass and you will be up dusting baseboards and scrubbing again in time. For now, Our Lord asks great suffering of you. This has infinite value far beyond homemaking right now. Rest in the peace of knowing that God's timing in this is completely PERFECT! And, let the housework go for now.

For your family: I know this temptation to feel that you are unable to mother, unable to be a wife to your husband, unable to do anything but be a blob. But, your example of dedication and openness to life speaks volumes loudly and clearly. Your husband is in awe of your ability to suffer as you bring his child into the world. And your children will not remember the lessons they are missing, but they WILL remember how much you suffered to offer them another sibling. These are lessons with great supernatural value and I know how hard they are to see when your focus is on the bucket! I'm here to tell you that you *are* teaching them right now!

For your baby: Possibly my greatest challenge is to connect with the baby when I'm so sick. The overwhelming focus is the suffering I feel. So, I disconnect with the baby. This is a huge struggle for me. Take one minute each morning, afternoon, and evening to tell this baby how much he is loved. That's it. Just say it in your heart. Welcome this baby and recognize it apart from the great suffering you now face.

I hope it was ok to share these with you, Emily. I share them because my heart knows right where you are and I empathize so greatly with this great Cross! I find myself in every sincere word and plea for prayer that you made. And, I am praying for you in a special way over the coming days and weeks.

May God bless you with great peace as you suffer with His child!

Dear Emily,

I am in the midst of MS right now - I have had HG in the past and am so thankful this time it is just the normal type of all day nausea. I don't know how old your children are but last time I was so sick - and my 10 y.o. played "school" with the younger ones and actually got quite a bit of work done. You are definitely in my prayers - and I really appreciated Jennifer's advice.

Mary

Emily - praying hard for you! I, too, get HG during pregnancies, for the whole nine long months. I will be keeping you in prayer, and don't let things like Christmas Decorations be even a blip in your thoughts right now. Really, big picture is you are growing a person, and a few months of a messy house just isn't a big deal. Be easy and kind to yourself (and my oldest daughter went through 2 "school years" where we didn't do much schoolwork at all while I was pg with ds and then dd (*ahem* learning videos and education websites were about it) and she got into college just fine. :) So really, be gentle with yourself. No mommy-guilt.
