Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I can hardly believe I am writing this, but I just found out yesterday that my mother (who has been caring for my older children tirelessly and helping and supporting all of us through my toddler, Jonathan's leukemia treatment) has been diagnosed with cancer herself. Last night they thought it was mesothelioma, which has a very poor outcome and a very short survival time even with treatment. Today they are leaning towards a diagnosis of peritoneal metastasis of the breast cancer she survived 11 years ago (which is a recurrence in her abdominal lining). Prognosis for this is also not great, but it is treatable through chemotherapy. She had been having trouble eating for several days and it was hard for the doctors to figure out the cause.

She has to go to the hospital again on Monday to have surgery to redirect her stomach contents around her duodenum (which is blocked by the cancer), and will also have exploratory surgery and a biopsy to figure out exactly what type of cancer it is and what the treatment will be. She will be in the hospital for about 4 days if all goes well and then we will know what treatment she will need.

My children are very close to their grandmother. Please pray this weekend that she will have a treatable kind of cancer with a good prognosis and that my sons (and I) will not have to face losing her so soon, especially after the stress of having a brother diagnosed also with cancer. Please also pray for her peace and comfort and my dad's, and for God's will to be done and for all of us involved to have the courage to accept it whatever it is.

UPDATE: My mom's pathologists cannot agree on the type of cancer she has - one possibility is a very untreatable and deadly (in a short period of time ) type, mesothelioma. The other is a serious but treatable recurrent breast cancer.

We should hear by Monday from the expert pathologist who will make the determination. Please pray that it is the treatable type. I am asking for specific prayers on this today because it is worrying me a lot just now and I need peace about it.

Oh, I'm so sorry! Praying for her surgery and that the cancer be treatable. Praying for strength and peace for you all as well. I have always been very close to my grandmother and know how hard it would be to lose one.

Oh, this is so, so tough! We've been there - I'm praying so hard for a clear treatment plan, for healing, and for God's gentle hand to soothe all of your fears and worries.

Praying very hard for your mom and for all of you in the wake of this news!

Thank you all so much. My mother has had surgery but the type of cancer is still undetermined. My toddler with leukemia is doing well. Your prayers mean so much to me - and my mother.
