Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Please pray for out little Rachel as she is having her cleft palate surgery this Friday morning at 7:30 a.m. She'll also have a lip revision and ear tubes then as well. The surgery will be about 3 - 4 hours.

The recovery looks to be pretty long and rough with only a liquid diet for at least 3 weeks.    Then a soft food diet. She is still on a bottle and LOVES her blankey. She and Hannah both chew/suck on one at night to go to sleep (must be a China thing ). Rachel also wants hers whenever she's upset. Obviously, she won't be able to have her bottle (we'll not be adding that back after recovery at all) or her blankey as she can't have anything in her mouth during healing.

Please pray us through this.

Specifically for: her pain control
a successful surgery with no fistules
that our bonding thus far has been sufficient enough to handle this surgery/pain
for me - I'm a nervous wreck!
for Hannah to understand why I'll be gone a couple nights at the hospital

Thanks, friends! Don't know what I'd do without you!

++UPDATE++

Rachel's surgery went well. We had one time on Friday night when she almost stopped breathing. She was given some morphine for pain and it was just too much for her little body to metabolize that quickly. We had to keep stimulating her to get her breathing for about 30 minutes. Our priest, and very close friend, stayed with me all day as my dh had the other three kids to take care of (Hannah needed her nap as well) and he got a migraine when we were in the recovery room. Our priest was there when we had the breathing trouble. As he was leaving he prayed over Rachel and all of us and I just lost it.

We came home on Sunday and she is doing great. She's only on tylenol and motrin (just a bedtime) for pain. It's incredible. The hardest part is eating and not having her blankey. She has to have a pureed diet and it's just so hard as she wants what we're eating. We're eating in shifts but it's still hard.

Last night she went to bed without a sound which was amazing as she always chews/sucks on her blankey to comfort and go to sleep. She wimpered a couple times during the night only. I woke her at 3:00 a.m. for her tylenol dose and she went right back to sleep. I just couldn't believe it. Today at naptime it's been hard though. I laid her in her crib (with her arm restriants on ), patted her and kissed her and told her goodnight and left the room. She fussed (with me going in to comfort her about 3 times) for about 30 minutes before she finally fell so sleep. She just doesn't understand why she can't have a blankey and why she's wearing those yucky restraints. So, I broke down again.    She's so sweet and I just pains me so much to see her suffer or be so confused as to why she can't have what comforts her.

Thank you so much for the prayers. I know that's what is sustaining me and helping us through this. Please keep praying. We have at least 3 weeks of this routine.

I posted some pictures on our blog as well.

***2nd UPDATE***

Things aren't so good here now. Sleeping is difficult at best. Rachel wakes about every hour.

Eating is definitely a challenge. We're trying all kinds of foods to get her to eat something. She's eating pretty well but I still worry about how much she's getting.

She REALLY, REALLY misses her bottle and blankey. When she wakes up in the morning and at naptime she just cries and cries for at least an hour because she wants her bottle. I'm worried the stress and trauma of so much crying will open her stitches.    She is most definitely showing her temper now, too.

You know, it's a mom's job to comfort your child and give them what they need. Not being able to give her what I know will comfort her is so incredibly hard.

I just keep telling myself each day we are one more day further from the surgery and into recovery and healing. Sometimes that helps....most of the time it doesn't.

Oh, what a full plate you have right now. Asking the guardian angels to take you into their special care through the coming weeks- to comfort Hannah while you are away and to ease Rachel's recovery.

Okay, we're less than 24 hours to surgery here and I'm actually getting butterflies when I think about it.

I have to tell ya I'm wondering why in the world God thought I could handle this!    I'm so in love with this little girl and her big sister but surely He must think someone else would do such a better job at handling this. And to think, I thought actually going to China and adopting them was hard. Ha....that was nothing!

Thanks for the prayers....please keep 'em coming.

Shall hold her in prayer,Lisa - and you as well!

Don't doubt God. He chose those girls for you because you were the mother to raise them for His glory.

Lisa, I'm praying right now..during surgery time! I've asked Mary to wrap her arms around you, for Rachels Guardian Angel to hold her hand and for Our Heavenly Father to give His graces to the care providers.

I've also asked for St. Therese the Little Flower to interseed for your little flower.
