please!
My dh took the boys on a weekend fishing trip. When he does takes these little excursions he takes care of our chickens so that, in theory, all I have to do is open their coop in the morning and close it at night. I collect any eggs and give them a few scraps.
However it always seems that when he does leave that is when something strange happens.
So this morning at 3:30am one of the roosters was out making an awful racket - I thought maybe he hid somewhere and got locked out of the coop accidently - well of course I couldn't find the net or the foot hooky thing that we usually use to catch wayward chickens - and not that I'm proficient in the use of either.
I don't how but some Saintly friend in Heaven must have calmed that rooster enough that I actually did catch him - he didn't even flap at me and I did remember to carry him upside down by his feet and I got him back into the coop (if you don't have chickens this might sound a little silly but roosters are rather large, excitable and have a nasty talon at the back of their foot).
I call dh's cell phone - voice mail. I was up for hours and finally got back to sleep. This morning I go up to the coop to let them out and latch is not properly in place - I was sure I had done it correctly the night before. Anyway - the chickens didn't run right out as usual.
I get back to the house to only turn around at a flurry and tizzy of chickens flapping all over the place. I go back and there is a raccoon in part of the coop - at this point I have dh on the phone. By the time I go around the coop to open the other door where he is trapped - I don't see him.
After going back to the run side of the coop - I'm talking to dh and a little face pops out from under the coop. Back down to the house I go to get few firecrackers - I set them off where I saw the critter. I don't see him run out so I have no idea if he still under there or not.
I just want to get through tonight and until dh comes home tomorrow. I know I will not sleep well but at least my older daughters will be home (they were at friends house last night). I didn't see any bodies - thank goodness.
Please pray for my nerves - and if anyone knows any saint with a special connection to poultry please let me know!
Sorry this is so long. But I feel better sharing my trauma with someone!
*****UPDATE*****
I think I've got the raccoon out from under the coop - my daughters and I found where he might have been getting in. We plugged up the hole with chicken wire and rocks.
But...I just got a call from dh...he thinks he may have lost his car key at the beach...
Please pray that he is indeed, parked above the high tide line and that he does find his key...I really don't want to drive over two hours down to the shore.
Everyone is OK - I'm just stressed - this NOT how this weekend was supposed to go. I have a commitment tomorrow that I will not be able to make if I have to go to the shore. Ugh.
Thanks so much for listening - you are all are *always* in my prayers.

Praying for you!
Last year my ds 17 had to camp out in the chicken yard with his gun because hawks kept carrying off our chicks! We've had raccoons too, nasty creatures. I can't imagine having to deal with a raccoon by myself. You are one brave woman.

Praying Donna! I hate when dh is gone. While he was gone this week, we had a tornado pass through our front yard and lost electricity and phones for a day! Thankfully, I have a big teenage son to protect us and keep us calm.
Try to enjoy the peace, tomorrow will be here before you know it.

As a owner of a chicken flock...........I will pray for you!
I read your subject heading and worried........I am glad it is only chickens
BTW........my husband built a hawk-proof, critter-proof run and coop. We are so trusting we have not even bother to shut the door to the coop for months....

Praying, Donna, those dumb birds put the bird in bird-brained, don't they?

Thank you for prayers! This is my first time back online.
Dh had to pay $200 to get towed about 20ft. Since he didn't have the key to take the car out of "park" - all the tow truck could do was drag the Explorer a bit further up the beach but when we consider the damage that could have been done..$200 doesn't seem that bad.
I drove down the next morning and the family had a nice day at the shore. A rather expensive one but...
And the chickens came out ok too.
I guess we'll tuck this one away to tell the grand kids one day.
