Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

In Dec. my niece lost her baby at 5 months, and this week the testing showed nothing wrong with the baby, but my niece was diagnosed with MTHRF. It is a rare gene defect/mutation which doesn’t allow her body to metabolize Folic Acid and B9/B12 like it should. Therefore, the baby wasn’t getting the nutrition that she needed.

The doctor told her it was pretty much a miracle that her 2 older children were not born with Spina Bifida or serious developmental delays because she carries both genes for the disorder. It got her mother and I thinking about who else may be carrying those genes in our family since re-current miscarriages are a symptom (she had 1, I had 5).

The good news is that they can try again after 2 cycles, and she is now on a specific type of folic acid and B9/B12 so her body can absorb them.

Has anyone heard of this, or had any experience with it?

I have a friend who's family has this disorder. My friend's older sister was blessed with a child with down syndrome and my friend's baby was born with Trisomy 13 and died shortly after being baptized and confirmed.

My friend received the diagnosis after she lost her daughter. However, she increased her folic acid intake and took more effective vitamins and they were blessed with one more delightful daughter. (They had 3 other blessings prior to losing their daughter.)

I will pray for your niece. It is such a blessing that for her and her husband that there is an effective treatment plan for them to follow.
