Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

One of my husband's partners called today with the news that her son has been hospitalized at a regional children's medical center. He seems to have some kind of a tumor in his lower chest cavity. We don't have very many details as they are in the middle of testing, still figuring out what is going on.

This family has been through a lot in the past couple of years. Please storm heaven for Christopher and his parents.

Updating on Christopher: Christopher has a tumor on or in his kidney. It is too large to be safely removed at this point. A biopsy was taken yesterday and the results will be in on Monday, but the docs are moving forward as if it is malignant. He has had chemo stents placed into his kidney at the same time as the biopsy was taken. They expect he will be having chemo as an outpatient for several weeks. The plan is to shrink the tumor until it is a size that can be safely removed (along with the kidney), then continue chemo as necessary. They hope to come home soon, after the biopsy results are in and they have a more definitive plan.

My dh and I have seen Christopher and his mom at Mass periodically. His dad is not Catholic. My dh talked to her about having Christopher included in the intentions at Mass and she was welcoming of that. We hope to visit over the weekend. My dh and I aren’t clear about the family’s wishes or openness to having Christopher receive the anointing of the sick or any other sacraments he has not already received, so please pray for us as we discern whether to and how to delicately broach these subjects.

Thank you for your continued prayers.

Another update: We visited with my husband's partner this afternoon. Christopher has Wilm’s tumor, which is the most common kidney cancer in children. He will be receiving his first chemo treatments by the middle of next week. The cancer has metastasized to his lungs, so the first order of business is making the metastases GO AWAY and shrinking the main tumor so the surgeons can get it out. After surgery he will have a long stretch of chemo. Overall, this will be a six month treatment process, at least.

He is also being treated for pneumonia and is getting regular pain meds, so they aren’t sure when they are coming home yet.

This type of cancer typically has a good prognosis, and his particular type of tumor has a good reputation for responding to treatment. Christopher's mom and dad will have serious treatment decisions to make in the next few days, so please pray for them in that regard.

Thanks for your continued prayers.

Updating 12/10/07: my husband got an email from his partner this morning:

“Christopher's nodules in the lungs are not responding to chemo, in fact after some preliminary CT scans late Saturday the radiologist said they look bigger and there are more of them. Monday Christopher will undergo several more tests and probably a biopsy of one of the lung nodules therefore he will probably be here all week, if not longer. The doctors will meet and figure out a new protocol for Christopher at some point early this week.”

Please continue to pray.

On a related note: I'm going to need to break out my rusty CPA skills and go back to work in January to help out at the office. My son has been enrolled at the local Catholic school beginning January 3rd and I have people lined up to help me with my daughter. I feel terribly selfish asking given what Christopher's parents are going through, but....this is a huge change for us and we need prayer support. Thank you.

Patty, praying for both of your intentions!

Please do not feel terribly selfish! God wants us to turn to him for very little thing.....not just the big crises. And, by asking US for prayers, you will get WAY more grace than just praying by yourself    See how useful we are? Plus, we need opportunities for praying for those in need.........thank you for sharing your need with us!

Come back for more, if you need it, okay?
