He was diagnosed in July with IgA kidney disease, and is on dialysis (both kidneys too damaged to function). He has been *such* a trooper, but now is going through a bad time, and is having trouble deciding what step to take next. The docs want him to do home dialysis every night, which they think would work best for him considering his young age and relatively good health- and he agrees. The problem is, he'd have to take 8wks off of work to train to use the unit at home, and he's just not sure he can do that.
He had only been at his new job for 3 wks before he ended up in hospital, and though they have been great about him working his hours around his dialysis, he's afraid that their understanding can only stretch 'so' far.
I don't even know what I'm asking, really. The poor boy was married less than a year, brand new job, perfectly healthy, and then "bam"- his world fell apart. I guess, please, just pray that he has the wisdom to make the right decision, and takes his health into consideration and not just his job. For better or worse, he's inherited our dad's work ethic (those Irish farm boys...)

Praying Lori! What a challenge the poor guy faces. And I know how hard it is to see a healthy brother get sick. They seem so invincible.

I am so sorry. My husband was diagnosed with this same thing about 10 years ago. What about a kidney transplant? Dialysis was really tough on my husband and he was very sick from it. We were in a very similar situation, just moved, new job,new baby. He was on a waiting list for about 2 years before, he was blessed with a kidney. However if a family member or close friend would be willing to donate, then obviously he would get it done sooner. I'm only wondering because I know my husband was not out of work for 8 weeks when this happened. They had him in and out of the hospital quickly. Whatever happens, whatever decision he makes, it will be a long road ahead and he and his family will be in my prayers.

Thank you everyone. I also forgot to mention that he has been a volunteer firefighter since he was old enough to join, and is very troubled that he can no longer respond to the calls. He still goes to man the truck and the radio, but it's tough for him to have to sit on the sidelines when people are in need.
Tracy, he is on the transplant list, and everyone from his firehall and every healthy family member have been tested as possible donors. Unfortunately, he has a rare blood type and very narrow veins which complicates things. I'm his best chance at a living donor (same blood type and narrow veins), but I am chronically anemic. Since the summer we've been aggressively trying to up my iron levels, but so far it's just not working.  My next blood test is Tuesday, so hopfully I will get some good news. We need prayers in that area, too.
I'll pray for continued good health for your husband- what a tough time that must have been.

A very strange turn of events...
My older brother has been flagged as a perfect match for our little brother (and I wasn't even close)! They are on to the next stage of testing, but everything looks very promising!
