Oh, boy-
My dh and I recently contracted to buy a house in NC. We were very excited about having our family back together after 6 months apart.
The house inspection was yesterday, and the inspector found heavy fungal growth in the sub floor in two different areas, cause unknown, and several other water-related issues. The inspection report stated that the fungal growth is a health concern.
Needless to say, there is NO WAY we are going to buy that house. My dd has so many allergy issues, and we just went through a tough week of respiratory distress with her that required breathing treatments and prednisone. My dh has severe asthma.
This house is not even three years old, so to have such a major problem scares as to owning it long term. Besides the health issues, which makes it impossible for us to buy the house, what else is going to go wrong?
The owner of the house is refusing to sign the termination of contract papers. His wife already signed. Initially he said he would sign, but now he is refusing. I am in SC, my husband leaves Sunday for a week in China.. and now this!
Please, please pray that this man will come to his senses and sign the papers. There is just no way we will buy that house.

Thank you, Mary! Your prayers must have gone straight to the Blessed Mother. I just received a call from dh saying that the seller signed the termination agreement. Thanks be to God! I was in an absolute panic- the past three years of allergies and related problems with dd have been very hard. I couldn't think of having to buy that house and constantly worry about what new mold may be growing or if all the mold was really removed.

Oh thank goodness!!! I am surprised he has baulked like that...I always thought contracts are always subject to passing building inspections..
Yes, that house sounded COMPLETELY unsuitable and would have cost so much more in health heartache and bills. Praying that you find a good, healthy house!!

Oh, I'm glad it's resolved. With the issue of mold it seems that the owner could be in sticky business if he didn't release you or fix it all at his expense.
Was the home inspection a contingency clause of the contract?

The inspection was a contingency- if repairs needed exceeded $10,000.00 then we could automatically cancel. My dh thought, based on the report pictures, that it would easily cost that much or more for the work needed- mold removed, flooring ripped out and replaced, cause determined and fixed. The cause of the mold and all the moisture problems was not determined by the inspector- we'd have to get a contractor to do that. But it's hard to do all this when one person is out of state and the other is in China.
I am just so relieved the seller let us out. I could not bring dd into a house with mold problems. We already spend too much time at the doctor.

Yes, no way that you could know that $10K would fix all that. You would need a professional mold remover, etc. And mold is just awful!
St. Joseph will send you the right house! Praying.

Melinda -- you all have been in our prayers. When we were house hunting, I prayed regularly to the eyes of Our Lady -- that she would guide us to the house that was meant for us. And she did (though the process wasn't easy -- "the house for us" was located 3 hours drive from where we started looking )!
