My dear fil has been battling an elusive cancer for almost a year now. He went for surgery on Tuesday to have the tumor removed (after many months of chemo) and they discovered that his entire liver is shot. There's not one bit of it that's salvagable. Of course, cancer patients can't receive transplants and you can't live without your liver, so the outlook is quite bleak.
He has had a complete return to the faith in recent years, brought about largely due to the rosary, so if you could please offer a Hail Mary for him (we call him Poppy) and my mil (Granny), that would be just beautiful.

Oh, Molly, you can count on my prayers for this, having just walked this path with my fil.

Just a quick update that my fil has been home from the hospital for a week, but he has his followup tomorrow (Monday) which includes receiving the biopsy results. He is very nervous and upset--very uncharistic for him and unsettling for us all. If anyone has a minute to offer a prayer for him and my mil tomorrow--for peace and comfort, and also for the miraculous healing that we're all praying for!

Molly I am praying for 'poppy' (this is the same loving term my children called my father) Molly my father battled cancer for 6 years and in the end it was the secondary cancer in the liver that he died from.
He was always strong and positive but I will say that after the last operation where things became clear that he did not have long to live, he also showed his first signs of his own grief (an important way to come to terms with a loss or an up-and-coming loss.) Which I think is what you are probably witnessing now with your f-i-l.
It is not a bad sign but only their need to come to terms with a very firm diagnosis that is unlikely to reverse. My father's expression of that grief did not last for long and I am sure that with prayer your f-i-l will move quickly through this natural process.
After he came through this I could see this short period for what it was - something that enabled him to continue to go from strength to strength in his christian acceptance of his condition and death and prepare for it well.
May God bless you all during this trial and suffering.
