Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

It seems that my 8 month old is going through a nursing strike as of today. She has refused to nurse for the past nine hours and didn't nurse vigorously before that. I am so sad and a bit worried. It was heartbreaking to offer her the breast and have her cry as if in pain. Reading an article at the La Leche League website helped a lot. Of the possible reasons for a nursing strike, quite a few are true of us right now: baby is teething, I reacted a bit strongly earlier today when she bit me (although she responded with a huge smile), she is completely congested with a cold again, and it looks like the inside roof of her mouth is white, so she might even have thrush. Ugh!

She is my 6th baby, but I have never faced anything like this before. Please pray that she begins nursing again soon and that I can get through this peacefully.

Thank you!

Praying, Irene! (Did you eat garlic or broccoli recently?)

Those colds really cause problems, too. My dc used to take one suck, then just sob.

It will all work out, never fear. Meanwhile, I'm sure I'm not the only one adding to Cindy's prayers!

Praying for you two. HOpefully through the night will be better - it often is. Focusing on the tactics in that article will help - particularly the offering breast while baby is in light sleep stage or sleepy. Lots of skin-to-skin contact. Nursing in a steamy room can help for a baby with congestion. Sometimes we really can't get to the exact reasons for a strike, but the back to breast techniques are general enough to address the various causes.

Idea - Take a bath, in a steamy bathroom, with a sleepy baby.

Irene,
If you suspect thrush, that could explain it all. If her mouth looks "yeasty" I'd get that treated asap. Thrush rarely improves on its own.
Praying for you both!
Elizabeth

so sorry. i've gone thru it 3 times. it is very frustrating. i agree sleepy/night nursings tend to be the most productive. I also had luck with getting in the bath with one of them. i would treat the teething pain & nose (whatever way you like to do that) and keep offering. Express a little milk if you get too uncomfortable.

the advice on the LLL site is great. you might also check out kellymom.com

i am praying for you.

Praying, Irene. I hope that you can figure out what's wrong and that she'll start nursing again.

Praying, Irene. My first had a nursing strike just at 8 months. That was the end of nursing for him. I didn't know any better, or how to help him. I'd do it differently now....

Thank you so much for all your prayers and advice and encouragement. It was great to know that all of you were here for me when I wrote my request last night.

Things are definitely looking up. I did as suggested and was able to nurse her for a bit in the middle of the night while she was basically asleep. I also took her to the doctor's office for a check to rule out thrush or ear infection. She is clear of infections, so it looks like it is the congestion that had been making her frustrated and angry.

The good news is that I have now been able to nurse her three times today without much difficulty. She is definitely not nursing as long or as vigorously as usual, but it's way better. I'll try to ease her congestion and hopefully things will be back to normal soon.

Thank you all so much for your prayers and help.

Good for you, Irene. Nursing strikes are so unnerving...I've been there . My prayers continue.
