I am writing to ask for prayers for discernment regarding my 16yods. He has a labral tear in his left shoulder.
We met with the ortho. surgeon on Monday. He was very thourough and not quick to push us into surgery. He wants us to weigh the pros and cons and make a decision that way.
Cons for surgery: immobilized shoulder and arm for one month and a 6 month recovery period til he is back at full strength. As this is his jr. year, we are unsure what college coaches will be looking for and when. (The doc actually brought that up.) His shoulder is doing ok with physical therapy, but not back to full range of motion, yet. And although it is arthroscopic, it is surgery.
Pros for surgery: He could sustain an injury anytime during the season, and the next injury could be even worse without a repair at this time. His confidence may not be there, ie. holding back, due to concern about his shoulder. Cartilage doesn't heal well on it's own (per doc.) Get it taken care of now, and avoid potential complication (arthritis when he is older.)
Mike is all about basketball and has hopes of playing at a college level (not a "big" school, but he has received letters from smaller ones.) He will be entering his junior year this fall. He is very high energy, and a sabbatical of this sorts will be hard. But he does understand how it would help.
I guess I am leaning toward the surgery, but it is a scary thing. I hope I don't come across as sounding like it is all for basketball. We do see his athleticism as a gift God has given him.
I hope this isn't too jumbled to make sense!
Frank (dh) is in the throes of tax-time, and I am sort of left with "whatever you think is best, honey." If we do want the surgery, we would like to have it as soon as possible, after school is out, so we have to decide somewhat quickly.
Thanks for listening!
God Bless,
Stacy in MI

I will pray Stacy, I know what these decisions are like - we had to make similar decisions for our very young daughter who had shattered her elbow and the doctors did not set this difficult break, perfectly.......
It is an extra burden of responsiblity when you trying to make the best decision on their behalf, you want to make a good one, amist choices that all have consequenses, pros & cons etc.

Thank you so very much for your prayers. It was late last night when dh came home and we had an opportunity to discuss this all together. My dh, ds, and I all came to the same conclusion that the surgery would be best for him.
It is scheduled for May 1, and is an out-patient procedure.
Having your prayers really helped, and we all felt peace of mind in the decision. Thanks again! You're great!
God Bless,

I am so glad that you were all of one mind! That is such a blessing. You all have been in my prayers, and I will be praying that the surgery goes well.
