Just when I thought it was safe to sit down with my Rosary and prayer book...
My 11yr dd had a birthday sleep-over last night. Three of the girls (two of Ruth's girls!) are still here. They were playing house in our detached garage and were given permission to have a fire in the wood burning stove. Easy enough, right? For the record, even this was hard for me to give permission for, but she has helped her father with it in the past.
So, one girl came in to use the bathroom and on her way out the door I hear her yell "Oh no, guys!!!!" It took me a second to decide that she did in fact sound worried so I jumped off the couch to look out the window and see flames circling one of the trees on the edge of our woods. Maybe 100 ft from the front door!!
I flew out the front door as the girls came running and I was screaming "What did you do?!!!" Our hose is away for the winter so we had to use a bucket brigade, with the kids running and filling up various containers while I poured and stomped. It took a good 15 minutes to get it under control, and then I continued to saturate it. Whew!
It turns out that my daughter dumped the ashes that she thought had cooled down next to the tree, which is surrounded by leaves. Thank God we had five inches of snow last week! It is quite windy though and the leaves were dry enough to ignite.
A lesson was learned, for all of us. I will go back to being the boring over-protective mom, and we all had a talk about where and when to dump ashes. Thankfully, we didn't learn a much harder lesson as it could have been in the summer. And never disconnect the hose!!
Why do these things happen when my dh and 15 year old son aren't here?

My dh started a fire inside the wall with a torch (fixing broken pipe) and guess what? The water was turned off (plumbing, remember?)!! We found exactly one filled water bottle and I broke the top of the toilet tank throwing it off to steal water from the top. I had to call 911 but we really did manage to put it out with that little bit of water; we had to throw it up inside the wall no less.

Oh my goodness, Molly! I'm really glad things got under control as quickly as they did! That is the kind of excitement you can easily do without!
Peace,
Nancy

Okay, now remember, the hose is disconnected to reduce the chances of the pipes freezing......leave the hose out if you want, in place, but NOT connected!
Glad it all turned out well! We had a similar problem on Christmas Eve when my friend's dd added a log to the fire without our knowledge....and a bit later a log rolled out and caught the living room rug on fire........scary in a room full of kids! (you know how large some families can be ........and then you out a few together and it just gets out of control )
Blessings! Phew!!

You earned a Fire Chief hat for that one!
Glad to hear all is well. There is nothing like real life examples to teach fire safety!
